     OP - October 24, 2011, 01:40 AM

(English or Urdu okay in this thread)

I grew up in the 1980's in Karachi, attended a private English-medium school (City School) and there was nothing resembling any education about sex, sexuality, menstruation, reproduction, childbirth, birth control, STDs, etc. The school was co-ed till 5th grade (age 10), then they split the girls and boys into separate campuses/buildings.

    Here's a video I saw recently (it's in Urdu)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpeBIHsl4po

For those who grew up in Pakistan, or who are there now, what is the kind of sex education that is available to adolescents and teens there? I mean, sex-ed within a school environment, not just stuff anyone can look up on the internet.

I did my Bachelors in Pakistan. And the only sex education I got was from peers. In fact, I did not know any such thing as vagina exist until a classmate told me. And I was over 18 when I came to know that information.
    Fucking retarded country.

That's just terrible. I never had "the talk" either, just an internet connection, a library card and enough curiosity to find out about on my own (but not enough to learn about it through experience  Tongue). I'm actually pretty surprised to know how much sex and slut shaming religion imposes on a person can detract them from getting it on. It's kind of a shock to realize that the fear of being tossed into hell by a bipolar white man in the sky or being shamed/ostracized by a religious community has managed to keep virile teenagers and young adults from smanging for thousands of years. Crazy stuff.

I wonder how many ex-Muslims received a decent sex education and what effect it's had on their sex lives?

^That question is worth opening a thread about it, unless if there is something similar to that.

Im always in support of sex education because of such cases like this, its unfortunate how the word "sex" has been demonized by the religious clerics who promotes sexual abstinence, which it can lead to unwanted ramifications.

I did have an argument with a christian friend who thinks its best for everyone to conform to sexual abstinence rather than teach them safe sex since its still a sin.

I think the topic's already been discussed but I'll start a thread if it hasn't.

What's even more unfortunate is the fact that many religious authority figures don't follow rules against active sexuality themselves. You know it's difficult to curb such a normal desire so why would you expect everyone else to and vilify them if they don't? Like men in papacy having denied the practice of premarital sex for years but remaining in news headlines involving sexual abuse allegations every few years. You're in position of power preaching the good word but you can't keep those frisky hands of yours away from little boys' pants? Oh, okay.

I seriously wonder how such a large number of people have fallen for this amount of BS and think well of themselves for railing against other people who choose to engage in it. Leaving the issue of honor killings alone for now, it's absurd to think of how the pattern of thinking has changed in the face of the concept of sinfulness and someone keeping tabs on them while they jerk off or fuck. I'm reminded yet again of the force of shame so strong it can curb sexual appetite far enough that people will not only stay willfully ignorant themselves but uphold the practice by teaching it to children rather than taking the initiative to learn and teach a body of knowledge that's so important in any cultural setting. I'm sure they'll all find their way out of the paper bag eventually but Jesus fucking Christ is this battle against religious dogma a difficult one.

Surprised, but sort of expected on how old some of you were when you became educated on sex. I remember hearing it from friends around 8 years of age (in Canada), at the time I thought it was icky but at the same time couldn't stop laughing either...you know young kids are. We did finally learn about it in school during 6th grade.

The thread title is a bit of an oxymoron though don't ya think?

I only learned about sex in Grade 7 Health class, although even before that I had sexual feelings. I felt so ashamed of them. When I first produced semen, I thought that I was sick (one of the abnormal discharges that we were warned about). But my father told me its true meaning.

    =============

On topic, being in the west was no better you know.  I didn't really understand sex until I had sex.  That was when I found out what happened.

I wish I had known, but my parents didn't allow those sort of questions and we weren't allowed to go to sex education classes.

This was me when i was 10

Me: Mummy, where do babies come from
Her: Allah gives babies to the couples he likes most.

    End of]

You know, I found it very very hard to break out of my muslim background the first few times my kids asked about babies or sex.

I reacted quite badly and closed the topic down fast and I snapped because I didn't know what to say or what was right to say.

It has taken me a long time to relax enough to discuss things with them, and although I feel unbelievably uncomfortable discussing it with them, I make myself answer their questions honestly.

We went from one day "don't ask me questions like that, that's rude" (but way worse than that), to one day me randomly explaining exactly what happens.

Thing is its not like they came up and asked in some innocent way.  My middle son came up to me once and asked me how men have sex together.  I sort of froze and didn't know what the hell to say Cheesy  and then he said "is it like the ladybirds we saw" (because we saw some ladybirds having sex) and then he started doing the motions...."like this mummy, is it like this?"

My friend had to intervene because I had another "muslim residual" panic moment, and she started the conversation and then I sat down and joined in and just spoke to him about everything.

I am constantly surprised by the amount of damage that has been done to my view of sex all because of how I was brought up.

Sex was dirty, ergo I still see it that way, and I am still working on trying to change that but failing miserably.  Least i can do is try my hardest to make sure I don't pass this on to my kids.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I guess its because we have different experience which led us to have different views on it.your case is highly understandable on why you see it that way.

My views on sex is nothing but a pleasurable activity, the fact that it is being made a taboo is what even made me curious about it and to know why its unacceptable and a sin which led me to lose my virginty, its also funny that i disvirgined myself before being exposed to porn Grin (actually it wasnt available in the town that i was living back then plus they were on VHS tapes) and honestly i never thought there is such thing as porn( they call it Blue film over here at that time Grin ).

Despite that i have engaged in it as a muslim, i was afflicted with guilt for commiting a major sin, I cant remember the countless i have made promise to Allah not to indulge in it again only to find myself back to doing it because of pleasure which makes me more depressed with guilt, its like you vowed not to smoke again but you find yourself back to doing it and feel gutted.

But now as an apostate my views on sex has changed, the only thing bad i see related to it is STDs and unwanted pregnancy which are the risks of having sex. I hate rape with passion that i even ditched a friend who attempted to rape a woman but didnt succeed, its insane, whats the fun in it if there is no consent from a woman, however i have learned that most rapist only rape women to assert their dominance on women and degrade them, NOT out of pleasure which goes contrary to my views on sex.

On a general note, my views on sex is positive based on the ground that there is a consent between the participants and Im also not in favour of cheating as well.

I wish i could have been in sex-ed class or someone older to talk to me about it and also make me view women as human with feelings rather than sex objects, which we were made to see it that way practically by making us to lower our gaze so as not to see their body shape, women forced to wear hijab to cover their al-awra so as not to arouse men and women being treated as an inferior. This kind of attitude doesnt help the society at all, it only reinforces the views of men to see women as nothing but a property and sex objects. I think lack of sex education causes a lot more harm than benefit.

My parents were smart as fuck. They'd pull me out of any activities which even remotely reinforced "Christian values", but they never had any problem with me attending sex ed classes.  Afro

Might have had something to do with the fact that I was intentionally extremely vague in explaining the consent forms. Also I'd already read about sex stuff on my own anyway, and I knew from early on that this was a subject that was highly relevant to my interests.  Wink

    Lol @ this thread  Cheesy
I attended city school for one year and then got back to Italy. There's no sexual education in Pakistan, I sometimes wonder how my cousins learn about these things.
I got introduced to the world of penis and vagina at the age of 12?

It was my classmate, she was laughing because I didnt get her joke. Then she gave me a demonstration with her hands. Got back home, went online, learnt everything   Roll Eyes
Then of course, there were sexual education classes, so everything became clear.

If I remained in Pakistan, Im sure I would have been unaware of it. What a backward country... because teaching  basic stuff of the human body, is considered "filthy"...

Aren't women there pretty much told to just lie there like a dead log and let the husband get on with his plowing?

I'm worried about my 12 year old niece whose parents are from Pakistan. Even though they are pretty open minded I don't know how they will approach the topic when the parental consent forms come home. I tried bringing it up casually one time but it was like talking to a brick wall.
