  • Muhammad's weird fascination with ships
     OP - September 26, 2011, 06:34 PM

As I was losing my already weak faith, I looked througgh the quran in hopes that god would show me a sign of his existence.
I found many verses in the quran where god (aka muhammad's imaginary friend) calls certain phenomena and objects his signs. None of these signs are convincing to say the least, but one of them is completely absurd:

SHIPS! If anything, ships are a human invention. Why the heck is god taking credit for them?

2:164 Verily, in the creation of the heavens and of the earth, and the succession of night and day: and in the ships that speed through the sea with what is useful to man: and in the waters which God sends down from the sky, giving life thereby to the earth after it had, been lifeless, and causing all manner of living creatures to multiply thereon: and in the change of the winds, and the clouds that run their appointed courses between sky and earth: [in all this] there are messages indeed for people who use their reason.

14:32  [And remember that] it is God who has created the heavens and the earth, and who sends down water from the sky and thereby brings forth [all manner] of fruits for your sustenance; and who has made ships subservient to. you, so that they may sail through the sea at His behest; and has made the rivers subservient [to His laws, so that they be of use] to you

excuse me, but we made the ships... not you Allah!

16:14 And He it is who has made the sea subservient [to His laws], so that you might eat fresh meat from it, and take from it gems which you may wear. And on that [very sea] one sees ships ploughing through the waves, so that you might [be able to] go forth in quest of some of His bounty, and thus have cause to be grateful

42:32 And among His signs are the ships that sail like [floating] mountains through the seas

This is not even close to all of the times ships are mentioned in the quran. There are many other mentions of ships in this miraculous book. Indeed, some of the verses may allude to the fact that god is taking credit for the wind that blows the sails of these ships. However, in the instances above, it seems like god is taking credit for the ships themselves. And I can see how a bedouin might think that the winds that cause ships to move are mysterious.. but radiation, convection and the coriolis effect can easily explain this phenomenon.

What I am trying to say is that if someone says to me  "Look... moving ships.. therefore god exists." I will laugh at them and not take them seriously.

Grin That's nuts. Wasn't aware of that point before, but you're right. It makes absolutely no sense.

Hahaha. allah made the ships. Then again, it claims that it made all of us. Yet our parents made us. How does that work?!

Oh and as someone who has been interested in ships and boats all my life, I can say for certain that they were not just created one day in 7th century form and very definitely did evolve. That's blatantly obvious to anyone who studies the history of them.

    Little Fly, Thy summer's play
My thoughtless hand has brushed away.

I too dance and drink, and sing,
Till some blind hand shall brush my wing.

Therefore I am a happy fly,
If I live or if I die.

It's not the ships that are the sign, it is the fact that they sail through the sea.  Humans make the ships, but they only sail through the grace of Allah, just as birds only fly through the grace of Allah.

Oh look, the sun is rising, praise Allah!

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

But the laws of physics that Allah created made this invention a possibility...

I'm open for debate (of why we should re-/embrace Islam), but I will no longer participate in this forum. Message me if you need anything. Good luck and may you all find your way... again...

    pssshhh boat evolutionists.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

    Have you not read it?

Not all of it. Thought it was too poor a show to persevere with. Read about half of it I think. It was a while ago.

     Cheesy

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
