    Hassan
Contention : why is chance difficult to believe?

"I am however still trying to make sense of this world and it's meaning. Why it exists - why we are here? Is it all chance (something I find difficult to believe) - or is there a God? Is there a purpose?"

I still can't get my head round this.

What is it you all know that I don't.

    Am I stupid?

I think a better question may be, why should we know? Why do we expect to know everything about everything?

  • Re: Gladfly vs Gladfly
     Reply #32 - September 29, 2011, 10:13 PM

Because I want to know. I want it to make sense.
  • Re: Gladfly vs Gladfly
     Reply #33 - September 29, 2011, 10:21 PM

It's an understandable sentiment... but I don't think anyone "knows" the answers to these existential questions. That's what Existentialism is. Religion only puts a soothing blanket over the underlying angst.

The vast universe and everything in it does not care whether you or I want to know. It just is.

You hardly have to tell me that.

The vast universe and everything in it does not care whether you or I want to know. It just is.

Care or not - I still want to know.

I stopped off at points before where people told me it's futile to look beyond. Be satisfied with this and be happy.
  • Re: Gladfly vs Gladfly
     Reply #35 - September 29, 2011, 10:36 PM

Doesn't mean we stop looking, or caring or learning Smiley Just means we all learn to live with the big uncertainties in our own ways. Maybe when we ask "What is the point" we keep getting the wrong answer or no answer because we are asking the wrong question. Of course, these are age old philosophical issues.

Have you heard this audio series? It was recommended to me a while back over the same kind of questions. I listened to the whole thing and it really helped me make sense of a lot of things. This is only the first part:

Perhaps you're not finding any meaningful answers because the questions are meaningless.

    Not stupid.

Many a times during my lunch hour break, as I walked through the woodlands, I pondered on the intricacy and beauty of all that was around me. This beauty and complexity is a result of a staggering number of little chances! It is something that our minds cant grasp nor can it grasp the billions of years in which these chances were played out...so no it is not easy to accept...just like it is hard to accept that there may be no God...

Hassan the idea of the thread was to argue this with myself and see what comes of it. I did not mean to offend by using your words. I was using it as a starting point  Smiley

No, you wouldn't.  In fact, if you spent more time making threads like this and less time saying the n word, you would stand a far lower chance of getting banned.

How dare you speak to me like that.  You are a patronising, racist, idiot.  I suggest you take yourself elsewhere.

Don't post again, you have never been in the slightest bit funny, we were only ever tolerating your stupidity.  You have been... boring, bigoted, backward, and downright rude.  Please go away, and take your racist crap about black people with you.
