  • Wildcards in the search function
     OP - August 20, 2011, 02:20 AM

    They can't be used :(

Two problems I've encountered so far because of this:

    - I can't search for posts written by a certain user on a certain thread without specifying a string to search for (and "*" doesn't work)
    - I can't search for ships with my name on Sunbul's thread! That's because there's more text before/after my name. "*harakaat*" doesn't work.

Preferably, this should be an option from a dropdown menu ("Search within strings" or something like that, which is what I thought "Match any sequence" did, but it didn't work. What does it do? Huh? ), which would make it easier to search for variants of a string (coupled with "Match any words"). For example to see whether harakat or harakaat or harkaat etc... were shipped.

*Sigh* the search for true love continues. Hopefully technology might make it easier.

lol, I want to know whom (if anyone) I've been shipped with! Tell me you wouldn't want to know too?

I've never gotten them to work either. The search function is generally rubbish. Have to often be creative to find things you're looking for... or patient.

You're right. Wildcards are not supported in search strings.  But that's not a bug.  There is, however, a bug in the search function which prevents you from searching within a specific topic (i.e. thread) -- since that is supposedly possible.  I created a thread about this a long time ago but it got forgotten about.

PS: I have tested the topic-specific search on another SMF forum and it works.
