Tell that to to the dozens of working class families that lost their homes and everything they got and are at this very moment lodging in hostels and shelters, if not worse.
Tell that to the dozens of small business owners who lost their merchandise, savings, business and livelihood. Tell that to their children and families.
Tell that to the tens who are gonna lose their jobs because of the vandalism, looting, and arson that affected the businesses they work for.

And ffs, nobody was asking for bringing in the army or imposing martial law. All I'm saying bring in some policed carrying clearly-visible firearms and some armored vehicles. What the hell is wrong with that?

BTW did anyone see the footage of that huge fire at the Sony distribution centre in Enfield? It was very scary. I was not thinking about the material loss to the corporation as much as I was thinking about the many people who work there who might lose their jobs. The building looked gigantic from the helicopter feed.

A show of force is a game changer. Not a solution.

And every cunt and their dog is asking for martial law. This isn't happening on the internet. It's real.

clearly visible firearms and armored vehicles aren't totally necessary.  What you mean is a show of force to protect lives and property.  It doesn't require firearms, but a lot of man power and non lethal weapons such as bean bag guns, shields, and tear gas only used defensively.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

I watched a documentary about riots once, and it said the proven most succesful way to disperse rioters was to use animals - police dogs and mounted police.  Animals in a riot frighten rioters because they don't know what the horse/dog will do if they panic so they calm down instead.

Cuts and austerity are affecting tens and tens and tens and millions of people - but for some reason they don't decide to burn down the houses of immigrant families on high streets in their flats above their small shops. Millions of people also experience marginalisation and poverty, but they don't resort to this kind of violence.

So clearly, that is not the operationalising factor. Its more than that. Too reductive to only put it down to that.

And I say again, the primary victims of this have been working class, poor, marginalised, immgrant and people of every race - ethnic minority, white, everyone.

I don't think the BNP could ever have even dreamed of burning a whole high street of ethnic minority and immigrant families out of their homes and property as happened on Tottenham High St on Saturday night.

    Its complicated.

It's easy to condemn violence on the streets and wash our hands of it. That's something we should all do. Harder to consider the underlying problems and tackle the rot of which this riot is only a symptom.

Its easy to just explain it away as a consequence of one thing or another too. Clearly, its complicated.

But again - the people experiencing hardship as a consequence of the cuts runs into the tens of millions. If there was a direct causal link, there would be millions upon millions, not a few thousand, rioting.

The people who live marginalised, struggling lives in general also runs into the millions. On Saturday, immigrant families were burnt out of their homes and livelihoods. Those people from ethnic minorities are also marginalised and subject to social pressures and also prejudice and misunderstanding. But they didn't riot, loot and burn, they were victims of it.

I'm just struggling to view it as an isolated incident, billy. And I have no love for this criminal coalition government. Their "solidarity" with the victims just leaves a nasty taste of dirt in my mouth when they are a contributing factor. The rot is deep, and massive changes have to happen, and I don't have answers. This life is unsustainable. This riot wont be the last.

Ishina, don't rob people who burn immigrant families out of their flats and wreck and steal from businesses of their agency and personal responsibility. The primary victims are the poor and downtrodden of those areas whose environment and communities have been destroyed and were personally dispossessed.

Ok, just because the thought popped into my head whilst reading your post billy, but aren't all wars like that?

I'm not saying that it is a civil war out there since I saw more robbery than anything else, but isn't it always the poorest who get hardest in any war?  :/

The conspiracy theory I hear today is that the police is deliberately taking their time responding, after all the government cuts on the public sector including the police, they are deliberately trying to prove that the cuts shouldn’t apply to them, and its affecting the force etc??

You have to get rid of cities: riots are bound to happen where a lot of humans live in a relatively small area.

I don't think that making victims of the perpetrators is the way to go about it.

Like I said, tens of millions of people are suffering because of budgetary cuts and austerity. Millions are marginalised, unemployed. But they don't resort to burning poor people out of their homes, attacking bus drivers and setting his bus on fire, and so on and so forth.
