  • Riots in London
     OP - August 07, 2011, 12:39 PM

    Quote
Riots that rocked an area where a local man was shot by police were roundly condemned today as the shocked community surveyed the devastation caused.

Community and political leaders were swift to criticise the rioting, looting and arson that swept across Tottenham in north London last night.

Anybody know anything about the man who was shot?  What was the story there?

Ordinary working class people burned out of their homes and property and businesses who had nothing to do with any legitimate grievance that anyone may have in Tottenham.

I spent time not too far from there a few years ago. Most of the small business owners are immigrants or ethnic minorities, and they have been burnt out of their homes and livelihood. Alot of people living in flats above high street properties. Whatever grievance anyone had against the police or anyone else, that they have been victimised and had their flats and homes and businesses burnt, for no reason at all, is obscene.

Totally off topic, but that article was so badly written.

@ Billy, they had reason, criminal reasons.  Seems like most of the destruction was done by looters and from the sounds of it they were being called in my people who saw an opportunity to take advantage.

I have been in a riot against the police before but there was no looting, just many many people throwing glass bottles and whatever else they could grab to hand, at the police officers.  All it takes is for a few extra nasty elements in a crowd to incite mob mentality.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Hood nigga had no priors and preliminary investigation shows that the round lodged in the officers radio was police issue.

The riots have spread from Tottenham to other parts of London--Hackney and Lewisham are on fire right now.

The BNP are going to have a field day with this.

My sister was told to go home early from shopping in North Finchley today and shops were putting shutters down today because of rumours of a riot - police out in force.

    Summary:

Some guy was shot by Police in Tottenham. Some used the march demanding justice for him as an excuse to start a riot and loot. Copycat riots now spreading to other parts of London - more jumping on the bandwagon - riots now have nothing to do with shooting but have a life of their own.

Black guy - but no, I don't think it's racial/ethnic. The rioters/looters in Enfield were mainly white afaik.

It's a "life's shit let's use this as an excuse to riot, burn & steal stuff" thing.

i went to school round the corner from where the riot in tottenham happened, so quite sad to see this happening for me. i think some blame can be attached to the police for not preventing the looting and destruction to businesses/homes that ensued - i guess they were to busy protecting themselves :/

I support the rioters as long as they play RATM in the background while they overturn automobiles.

Looks to me the shooting was suspicious - but that doesn't excuse the rioting tho.

Watching BBC News. Homes and business ablaze in Croydon.

Some trouble in Birmingham city centre tonight, which is worrrying, because Birmingham has a history of riots in the last 25 years.
