Still waiting for you to PM me about doing the recording thing by the way.

`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

    Do any current members sing?

    I might post something later.

I'd like to add that this isn't the type of song that I'd normally sing, but I thought that I'd experiment with it.

After my horrible rendition of a pop-rock song, I decided to do another cover using a more classical style. I did this without having warmed my voice up. Feedback would be appreciated.

Whoa Hassan, I thought you were just posting someone else's song until I watched it now. That was awesome! Such a lovely voice and powerful song! Your voice sounds almost James Taylor-esque to me.

Q, solid effort dude! Some of your pitches could use a little work but so do mine so I shouldn't be talking

    Thanks dude.

Woah, I was totally expecting you to cover a contemporary song, hearing some Frank Sinatra was a pleasant surprise.

You have a solid base, evidenced by the vibrato in your voice.

I've actually been working on matching pitches, I can match the low ones pretty easily but the higher notes are more challenging.

Check this guy out, he's a baritone doing a cover of Skyfall. His breath control is amazing.

justperusing, did you actually add music or just put the song on loud enough for your mic to pick it up?

Did you put the music on and turn up the speakers or do you have something to add it?

I just listened to this again. There is obvious room for improvement but you know that already so that's neither here nor there. I really like it dude, keep it up. We need more classical stuff, all this contemporary stuff is boring.

Yeah I just turned the sound up on my phone and recorded.

Thanks Q! And I chose Sinatra cuz most pop music is really tenor-y and that gets my voice into trouble

Lmao, you should've heard my attempted cover of a pop-rock song. I went into falsetto and everything went downhill from there.

It's the curse of the baritone :(

Eh I'm fine being a baritone. Would you rather sing as if your balls hadn't yet dropped or embrace your grown ass man voice?

The latter, of course. Speaking of balls, here's some music theory for you:

I'm not sure how much you know of the history of western (classical) music, but there used to be men called castrati, who were… modified… before they reached puberty, and so retained the high voices of boys, but the size and breathing capacity of full-grown men. After this process was finally abolished, some men became falsettists, or countertenors, often singing roles created for castrati. These men are just like you and I, except they choose to work and strengthen their falsetto rather than their chest and head voice. The point I'm trying to make is that these men are usually baritones, as something with the baritone voice usually results in a higher, richer falsetto.

Check out the lead singer of Coldplay , he's a baritone.

Have you ever tried a classical style of singing HM?

It's not always the case that you can't sing, it could be that you just haven't found your style yet. For instance, I sound relatively tone deaf when trying pop-songs but I can pull off more operatic stuff. I remember your recitation of surah weed, give classical singing a go.

What I love about artists like Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan is that they'll never be known as technically great singers, because they weren't. But if you're talking about the sheer venom they put into words then I'd love to see any mainstream singers come close to them.

I can do opera, sort of lol much to the annoyance of my kids (and neighbours) ears lol.. I think anyone can learn to sing in the operatic style really if they tried, it's not that hard when compared to singing something like gospel music which really does require a huge vocal range.

^ You and I have been listening to some very different opera singers. Grin

But emphatic yes re great singers with unconventional/"bad" singing voices. "Good" singers aren't too hard to find. I know several and their voices are very pleasant and it's fun to hear them, but I'm usually not moved by their songs. Artists that can give a really remarkable performance that stays with you and plays with your emotions is harder, and there's a lot of bad singers who are great at that.

Idk about that Suki, opera singing is very pure, it suits people with specific voice compositions. Proper opera singers sing without microphones, you have to be able to project your voice across an entire hall such that the front row hears you just as well as the last row does (have you seen how massive opera houses are?). The average pop singer just wouldn't be able to do that. You can change the tone of your voice but you can't change the vocal cords you've been given. There are many famous artists who would make horrible opera singers and many opera singers would make atrocious pop artists.

One of the keys to classical and opera singing is vibrato, some people can't learn how to use vibrato.

I don't sound as horrible when singing Frank Sinatra-esque sort of things - anything that doesn't stretch my vocals too much. I was once told that anyone can sing so long as they've trained the right muscles. I haven't.
