To all of you non-Arabic speakers, I picked three Iraqi folkloric songs performed by Ilham Al-Madfaie who pioneered mixing the guitar with Iraqi music. I highly recommend them especially the first minute of the first video. The combination of the guitar with classic Iraqi tunes is sublime.

Yes, this was really good - I enjoyed it, IA, thanks. Afro Couldn't understand much of his dialect though, 'Khatar adnu Farah' - Happiness is a danger to/with him/her???

Not listened to the others, will do when I have a mo.

Sit back, relax, and listen to this example of rather therapeutic neo-sufi soul in Abida Parveen's immortal voice. Smiley

No need to watch the others. I just wanted to see if you can understand it. Khatar means dhiyoof (guests).

Interesting - what do you think the origin of that is? As you know Khatar means danger in classical Arabic.
  • DJ Booth Mk II: more fantastic music!

It's a different word with a different spelling and pronunciation.

    Danger is Khatar خطر
    Guests is Khotaar خطار

I don't know the etymology of the word but I would guess it's Persian or Turkish.
  • DJ Booth Mk II: more fantastic music!

Khatar is an Arabic word - but perhaps as you say Khotaar is a foreign word that just so happens to have the same root as Khatar.
  • DJ Booth Mk II: more fantastic music!

They don't have the same root. Different words.

    For example:
The Fus'ha word  hami حامي  which means defender/protector
and the Egyptian word   hammi   حمي which means give him a bath

Similar spelling and pronunciation but completely different etymology, meaning, and root.
  • DJ Booth Mk II: more fantastic music!

Well I bow to your superior knowledge of colloquial, but I always thought hammi was a colloquial usage from the root h-m-m which contains words like; Hammam = bath.
  • DJ Booth Mk II: more fantastic music!

You're absolutely right. But my question is, do the words hammi حمي and hami حامي have the same root? No

Same thing with Khatar خطر and Khottar خطار . Different root.

Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams

I despise Bryan Adams, but that song is admittedly pretty awesome. But the supposedly semi-autobiographical lyrics are bullshit in the sense that Bryan Adams was fuckin 10 years old in the Summer of '69.

For a while I was working on a parody song called "Summer of '89"
