Hey would anyone miss the shoutbox?

Just wondering whether the shoutbox is worth keeping. We put it up originally way before the IRC chat was even thought of, but with the chat being available these days the shoutbox hardly seems to get used. Maybe we could drop it and replace it with something more useful.

ETA: Separate issue, but I've also been thinking we could make an integrated template so the IRC chat appears to be part of the forum.

Naah..

IRC chat is for simple chit chat and it is full of useless stuff. I like shout box because I get to read and post only interesting random fact of the day.

Depends what you replace the space with. I still think there is are three distinct and separate needs for

a) a forum for discussion
b) an area where individual for pinging each other/shout-outs
c) an area to chat

I quite like the shout box, it does serve a purpose that is different to chat.

By the way, chat consume a lot of memory specially in firefox which keeps on adding if you leave it long enough. It is so far fine in IE and Opera.

Should be ok in Chrome and Safari too. FF does have a memory leak problem with some apps.

Anyways, the point was, if you put that as a widget somewhere on the regular forum, FF users will get memory leaks, which is not a good user experience.

Osmanthus, the shoutbox, to me at least, serves the purpose of saying what's on your mind like facebook status, or discussing topics that aren't important enough for a thread or plain randomness. It's fun, useful, and it has grown on us CEMBers.

I'm open for debate (of why we should re-/embrace Islam), but I will no longer participate in this forum. Message me if you need anything. Good luck and may you all find your way... again...

Well, if those people are using the chat they will have the same problem anyway, regardless of whether the chat is integrated with the forum or not. IOW, they wont be any worse off than they are now.

What I actually had in mind was possibly putting the chat wrapped within the forum index.template but on its own page. That way people who don't want to use it don't have to.

If you want to add chat as a feature on the tabs, that would be good, as long as it opens in a new window. Or make the chat id's integrated with the forum id, so that we don't loose them if we go to some other page.

New tab, selectable by the user, would be my preference. I've kinda gone off target="_blank" as I agree with the reasons for it being deprecated in future.

Not sure what you mean about the id's. If you mean usernames/login/etc that is not possible with IRC.

It should stay.
The only potential replacement is a lolcat gallery, and you simply don't have the bandwidth to cope with lolcat power.

reasons to keep the shoutbox:
1. You can read shouts almost anytime your free. In chat, you need other people online the same time as you.
2. Like Muddy said, shouts are for the more interesting stuff and not for long conversations.
3. Lazy admins are lazy and don't like to monitor too many things
