Oh right. How does it show anonymously on a business account but not a personal one? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

If you donate using your personal account your name will show.  If you donate using a Business account your business name will show.  I've done it before, it's easy.

this was actually feautured on richard dawkins website glad he cares

This is good news. The comments at the bottom of that page were all very supportive so hopefully this will translate into some generosity from the wider secularist/atheist/agnostic/humanist community.

    STANDING ORDER MANDATE

Thanks for getting these details Hassan. I vaguely recall Jeremy Clarkson, yes Mr twatty car man, being the victim of his own smugness, when he claimed that no one could do anything malicious if they just had your bank account sort code and account number. To prove his point he published his account details in this column, in The Current Bun I think, with which someone signed him up to an ongoing direct debit to Oxfam. Not sure what, if any, risks there are with publicising bank account details, but it make be worth looking into this before they are published on the CEMB donation page. Maybe a statement "To arrange regular donations by standing order, please contact Mr Magoo at M.Magoo@ex-muslim.org.uk", or the like may be a better idea?

Alright, well since I've paid CEMB, can you pay yourself an extra £100 on my behalf retrospectively?  grin12
Just kidding - I'm not that cheap (well .. ahem ... ) ... I'll wait until next payday.  Smiley
Good luck with your training. Do stretch your ITB's, they shortened up and got me injured before a marathon last year :(

I'll happily transfer £100 from my wallet to my own bank account on your behalf. We can call the recipient charity "Chris in Need". I just saw that you've sponsored me as well, thanks so much HO, really appreciate how generous so many of you have been towards the BHA...though I'm feeling the pressure now and am going to have to shake this chest infection off pretty quick and start doing some running so you're not all bitterly disappointed by me keeling over midway round  wacko.

Please delete me from the above, mate. I do not want anyone sending me cheques.

I'm afraid I wouldn't feel comfortable handling cheque on behalf of the CEMB either. However, unless I'm missing something, why can't anonymous donations be made by making a cheque payable to CEMB and sending to "BM Box 1919, London WC1N 3XX, UK", as per the instructions on the donation page (http://ex-muslim.org.uk/indexDonate.html) (you have to scroll down a bit on the page to see this info). Please correct me if I'm spouting nonsense, but as far as I can recall, when I make cheques out, my bank statement just shows the cheque number and the amount paid, not the recipient in any form. Also, I should think that if you did donate to the BHA for my half-marathon, your bank statement would only show the details of the payment recipient, which is the website "everyclick.com" (this is just a generic fundraising site). Please note though that I've just checked my fundraising page and as I've got over £100 in sponsorship from CEMBers already, I won't be able to match any more donations so, whilst I'd love you to sponsor me and the BHA will use the money to good effect, it wouldn't increase CEMB funds directly.

I guess a completely anonymous donation could be done using a Western Union transfer, but Ive never done one before.

Tut - how do internet porn DVD companies handle your payments anonymously?

Btw, coming from the highest source of authority: £10,000 a year is what it takes to run CEMB well. Costs are promotional material and hosting halls and events. Rest assured no one is profiting and the people at CEMB by no means travel using private jets like one evangelical in the US that I once saw/read about!

If thats the case, why did they initially ask only £3 per person? Are there enough members who are willing to contribute towards at-least £10000 per year?

£3 per month, btw. ~278 members a year I think is a feasible target.

If CEMB wants more donations then it really needs to reconsider how its website is designed. It won't persuade many people to donate in its current state.

    Whats wrong with current design?

Also it is easy to point fingers. Remember there are very few people who are actually taking initiative of this. Designing a website will add up a lot of cost.

Anyways, if some creative designers have better design ideas, I am willing to help in the development for free.

The problem with the website is that it has no element of persuasiveness at all. You need to keep in mind that the majority of visitors only ever skim over a site. The link of google automatically redirects to their donation page but there is nothing on it that lets people know that it's for a good cause. There's nothing there to persuade people to donate. It does nothing to inspire trust in visitors. Unless people read the manifesto page, they wont even know what the site is for and where the money goes. These things need to be immediately obvious.

Another problem is that even if visitors do want to find information about CEMB, the navigation bar has about 15 links on it which is far too many for the average brain to take in. There is no clear place to start with, you just get overloaded with information. There shouldn't be more than 9 links. That is about the maximum the brain can take in (IIRC).

My dissertation involved working with a charity website. I did a lot of research on persuasive web design and also good web design that inspires trust in people. CEMBs site is lacking in a lot. Although it wont take too much effort to turn it around. It mostly involves simplifying the navigation bar, making information easier to find and clearer. Also adding some persuasive elements to it would help get more donations. These changes would be good enough to start with. (I don't like it's general layout either but that isn't as important for the time being).

I'm more than happy to volunteer too and help make it better. I have good experience with web design.

I agree with PersuvianSkies that there's too many tabs. Also, either one of the tabs should be "donate" or it should be almost impossible to overlook donations link on any page.

In donation page, or Home, or About Us (I guess it's Home now) there should be something inspirational - maybe words from best of Ex-Muslim bios, even Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights would be a lot more captivating and inspiring than current greeting:

"Opinions expressed in the forum do not necessarily represent the views of the Council of Ex-Muslims. "

I knew about the forum long before I joined. When I finally did it was not because the website attracted me it was because someone (Islame) recommended the forum.

    Why not?

Flash and good web design just don't make a good mix. Especially these days with mobile internet on the rise. CEMB just needs to have it's information made more accessible and it's aims easier to understand. It doesn't need stuff like flash, it doesn't suit the type of website it is.

I am not saying make it entirely flash based. You can create a better design for front page of the forum based on html/css (offcourse with php). I am saying, there should a be flash presentation of who we are, and why we are ex-muslims, and it is perfectly ok to be an ex-muslim. And it should only be there for main site. Or people who clicked through google for the first time, they can first get the flash presentation before they can reach to the actual link they clicked on.

Something like that probably wont be too bad if done right. Although, as I said earlier, most visitors will only skim through a site. Most wont stay to watch a flash animation of a website they've just clicked on. I wouldn't have that as the first thing that appears when they view the site. The idea isn't bad, personally I think it can be implemented in a better way without being too intrusive.

That's my own view anyway. This is something that needs to be debated on though, and by others too. We need a separate thread for this so we can discuss it properly.

First however, we need to know whether this is actually feasible (mods, looking at you). Also, if it is feasible, I want Os overlooking the project to ensure it goes ok (or another mod who has good skills in user interface design).

No way. People should be given that content they want. Directing them to a "presentation" before giving them the content they asked for is really bad practice IMO. Personally I hate it when sites do things like that.

If you want to have a video or whatever available on request that's fine. Not as a sidetrack or hijack though. What you're proposing is basically a splash page, and they are known to cause massive bounce rates simply because they waste people's time and piss them off.

I only have anything to do with this forum. I've never had anything to do with the main CEMB site, nor have I talked to those who have. I think (from memory) that Zia is the webmaster for the main site.

Just having videos like ones on the main page still don't look very professional for main page. A flash presentation can do a lot better.

Muddy - its adds little & will put people off from visiting.  Without a budget or expertise, how professional & brilliant do you think this flash presentation will end up looking?

Flash rarely looks professional. It's an absolute pain for most people, especially when it's forced onto them on the main page. You will only succeed in putting people off. We also need to keep in mind those people accessing this site from mobile phones (which will become increasingly more important as time goes on). This site needs to stay as accessible as possible for people on all platforms.

What we need is something that makes it immediately obvious to visitors what CEMB is for with only a quick glimpse. After that, it should be clear to them where they can find more information, what the donations are for, what our aims are, etc. It needs to be simple, concise and quick. Most importantly, it needs to be very clear that we are a charity (currently, this is not the case).

I think a small amount of flash used right does work. E.g.
    http://www.roomtoread.org

It depends on the type of flash and how it's used.
