    I suppose we ought not mention to freesoul that Darwin's body of work completely abolishes the notion of superiority of any one race, and that it was largely his creationist opponents who were clinging on to the idea of non whites being savages.

    Darwinism is even more radical than that. Correct me if I am wrong but (white) skin colour is a mutation - we are all Africans. It's just a question of how far back one is willing to look.

    Darwin may not have had modern knowledge and advancement in the sciences to back up his theories, but he accurately predicted a common descent from African origins.

    Not that I disagree with what he said as he was proven to be right, more surprised by his knowledge over a hundred years ago.  How on earth did he know our early gorilla ancestors were not from Paris or Bosnia?

    Gorillas live in Africa and not Paris. "In each great region of the world the living mammals are closely related to the extinct species of the same region." That's how he knew our ancestors were African.

    There was no evidence at the time. He put the pieces of the puzzle together through directly observing the world, extensive travelling and study, compiling ideas that were counter-intuitive, confusing, shouldn't fit but did, ideas that were even blasphemous, directly challenging the status quo and challenging his own faith.

    It's what is most compelling about the work of Darwin. You can follow his journey, almost feel the moments of realisation as they arrive in his mind, gradually collecting and crystallising into solid theories.

    And yeah, gorillas are not our ancestors, but I know what you meant.

    It's also worth pointing out that Darwin himself didn't have much faith in the fossil record anyway, which at the time was sparse, mostly unverified and full of hoaxes.

    Actually this isn't the best way of putting it. None of these things generally depend/have depended on the knowledge we gain/have gained from evolution theory, rather we learn about these things from experiments done by molecular biologists/biochemists/cell biologists in the lab and then these things have been used to provide supporting evidence for evolution. In fact I'm pretty sure that even if the theory of evolution was never proposed yet we would still have achieved all the things you mention above - these are all things we have learnt about through biochemistry/molecular biology/genetics in the lab and have not depended on what evolution theory has proposed. On the other hand it is rather cool that these things have all turned out to be able to provide positive supporting evidence for evolution.

    I accept evolution but I just don't generally like it when claims like these are made - although sometimes it gets me accused of being a creationist  Roll Eyes - but you would be very hard-pressed to find a molecular biologist who disagrees with what I said above.

    No, that isn't what I meant. I mean these models of understanding in different fields of science, (not just medicine), rely on the same principles, concepts, vectors that the evolutionary fields of science do. If evolution is false, these also must be false, since they share the same base principles, are intrinsic with each other, run parallel with each other, compliment each other.

    no, it wasn't really a question of evidence really - i guess it was the Islam in me that always made me question apsects of it (although even as a Muslim I stated many times that I accept evolution as fact) - but that fog has since lifted  Smiley

    i guess there always have been and probably always will be things that are not adequately explained during my lifetime in the required detail (i've discussed these many times before so won't discuss it here) - but i guess these days i'm more willing to take it on faith that evolution was solely responsible  Tongue
