Egypt: Drop the charges against Kamal Abbas

    http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/solidarityforever/show_campaign.cgi?c=1287

    Quote
On February 26 a Misdemeanor court in the city of Helwan sentenced Kamal Abbas, the general coordinator of CTUWS, in absentia, to six months imprisonment for “insulting a public officer” during the 2011 International Labour Conference in Geneva. The sentence refers to Thursday 9 June 2011, when Kamal Abbas interrupted Ismael Fahmy while he was delivering a speech to the Conference.

Kamal Abbas, who attended the Conference as a representative on the ITUC delegation, is accused of expressing his objection to the claim that the old state-controlled Egyptian Trade Union Federation truly represented Egyptian workers.

The international trade union movement is extremely concerned by this sentence against Brother Abbas, and its implications for Freedom of Association, Freedom of Expression, and democracy in Egypt.

We ask you to take part in this campaign to pressure the Egyptian authorities to immediately withdraw all charges, annul the sentence, and to refrain from any further harassment against trade unionists or other civil society representatives for the exercise of their legitimate activities.

This is a petition to Stop the cuts to healthcare for refugees in Canada:

    http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-the-cuts-to-healthcare-for-refugees-in-canada#

    Quote
On Friday May 11, doctors all over Canada stood up against the cuts to refugee health care and demanded justice for their patients. Ninety doctors in Toronto occupied an MP's office while others rallied in Ottawa on Parliament Hill. Join them in stating that you do not believe in a Canada that denies health care to its most vulnerable

The Canadian government is planning on making significant cuts to the Interim Federal Health program, which will result in many refugees in Canada losing access to primary health care services and medications to treat their illnesses. Once these cuts take effect on July 1, 2012, refugees will only be covered for health care if it is urgent or essential or is a threat to public health or safety.

The cuts will mean that some refugees will not have coverage for prenatal care or even treatment for a heart attack! Others will be able to receive a diagnosis of diabetes, but no insulin to treat it.

We call on the Catholic Archdiocese of Bombay to encourage the withdrawal of complaints against Indian Rationalist Sanal Edamaruku

Please join the Rationalist Association (UK) in condemning the misuse of Indian law by several Catholic organisations to silence a campaigner against superstition. In March 2012, following his exposure of a supposed miracle at a Catholic Church in Mumbai as nothing more than the result of a leak, a complaint was lodged against Sanal Edamaruku by local Catholic organisations with the Mumbai police, who are now able to arrest him. He has been denied 'anticipatory' bail which means if arrested he faces a long term in prison merely for explaining the science behind an apparent mystery.

richard dawkins "He exposed a fraudulent miracle. Since when has the unmasking of a fraud been 'offensive'?"
pz myers ""Harassing Sanal Edamaruku for exposing the truth is an outrage against reason and justice.""
john opie ""I am signing this petition because a person exposing any sort of fraud should not be hounded or have the fear of prosecution forced upon him.""
david wonfor "The sleep of reason produces monsters."
noel doyle "Exposing opportunist religious propaganda should never be a reason for a human being to be imprisoned or punished in any way for. "

Cheesy Cheesy Bull shit comes in various flavours ! It's comical how one group claims their BS is better than the others.  It's basically a live and let live amongst the bullshitters[like crooked politicians].
People are worried that once one BS is exposed other skeletons will roll out of the cupboard.
So in the end it comes down "you believe your BS I will believe mine, both of us can be happy !" much like how crooked politicians fool people.

    TO: PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN

The world is watching with horror as homophobia dominates Russia and dissenting voices are being silenced, sued, and imprisoned.

We urge you to put an end to this persecution and respect the human rights of all Russians regardless of their sexual orientation or political beliefs
    .

Published August 17th: In Moscow, Pride marches have just been banned for 100 years. Anti-gay activists are using the Russian government's gay gag laws to sue Madonna for $10,000,000 because she spoke up for the LGBT community. And punk band Pussy Riot has been sentenced to 2 years in prison for their musical protest – deemed "homosexual propaganda."

The Church of England has voted to continue its ban on female bishops. Such is its legal right, but this is yet another reason why it's time to stop giving the exclusively male clerics an automatic place in the UK parliament. Please sign and share this petition (it's got over 4000 signatures in three days, but needs momentum to get press coverage in order for us to read 100,000!): http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/42117

Danielle Powell, Grace University Student Kicked Out For Being Lesbian, Must Repay Thousands

    Quote
Danielle Powell was close to getting her bachelor's degree when she was kicked out of her university for being gay in 2012, and now says the only way the school will transfer her credits to another school is if she agrees to pay $6,300. In response, Powell has launched an online petition to pressure the school to forgive the debt.

"At that time, my family had no idea, so I had to come out to my family sooner than I would've wanted," Powell told The Huffington Post.

Powell said that the university told her she could participate in a restoration program, involving counseling and regular church attendance, to get readmitted, but she would have to live off campus and could not stay overnight in the dorms. She began the restoration process in the summer of 2011, so as not to jeopardize work that she was afraid she might lose by transferring to another institution.

But shortly before the start of the spring 2012 semester, Grace decided not to readmit her because she was still dating women.

By October 2012, as Powell was looking into attending another college, she said she was told that Grace would only transfer the credits from her three and a half years if she paid a $6,300 tuition bill from the semester during which she was suspended for being gay. The university denies they have withheld her transcripts, but Powell said she's only been offered a student copy she cannot use to transfer........

It sounds like they aren't backed by any organisation. If they brought their case up with Southern Poverty Law Center or some other civil rights group I think they could get plenty more help than just the debt dropped. As discrimination goes this sounds pretty bad.

Sounds like she needs a lawyer. If they are a private institution, they can do pretty much anything they want. However, she fulfilled their terms to be readmitted but they decided not to readmit her anyway. It seems like that point is where she has a case.

Aside from the reason for her being kicked out, everything else sounds like pretty much SOP for any university. I feel bad for her and I hope she can get the debt forgiven, but maybe she should have chosen a university that wouldn't have kicked her out for being gay in the first place.

I hear the rains, I see the fire, I feel the flame. It doesn't change the faces I want to blame for the shame I'm feeling.
But the winds of change will blow again. And we're the lucky ones who travel on towards the sun.

Can you hear it calling you?
