    Any fans?

Whenever someone tells me that they hate jazz, I could never resist quoting The Mighty Boosh:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKwQ_zeRwEs

"You hate jazz?  You fear jazz."

Share your favourites (artists, styles, albums, songs etc.) from this universe of a genre.  Or, if you hate and/or fear jazz, rant it out.

Against the ruin of the world, there
is only one defense: the creative act.

^ I'm really into fusions, especially Latin and soul Jazz.

Here's Strata-East founder Stanley Cowell on the Rhodes and the thumb piano (inspired me to get one for myself) with a gorgeous composition, typical of the 'spiritual jazz' movement of the time:

That was "I want to dig deeper into Zappa"-brilliant.  One of my favourite musicians, Paul Humphrey, is on the drums there.

Any good album recommendations on where to start with Frank Zappa?

I love the drum intro.  Afro

He's got a massive catalogue and he toyed with many different genres. He is pretty much genre defying though. A thing with Zappa is you can love one record and hate the next cause they aren't similar. If you're into instrumental/jazz, and you like Peaches En Regalia, definitely get Hot Rats. Brilliant album.

His other great jazzy albums: The Grand Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka

Billy, Coltrane is my first love when it comes to jazz.  I was never really all that bothered with it back a few years ago in my mid-teens but when I heard Q-Tip's Let's Ride, sampling a cover of Trane's Giant Steps by Joe Pass, I was solidly hooked on the composition.  I obsessed over that one cycle for days then wanted to see how he evolved as an artist, going back to his earlier material and his work with Miles.

Speaking of Miles and Trane, the Kind of Blue sessions have got to be up there with the greatest moments in music history..

After you posted Peaches En Regalia, I downloaded Hot Rats.  I was surprised to find that it's from before 1969; it really does sound ahead of its time.  My favourites are Peaches, Little Umbrellas and It Must Be A Camel (the horns are so good there).  Oh, and jazz violin?  Love it.

Nice one.  On a slightly related note, and I don't know if you're into hip-hop but Gilles Peterson had Flying Lotus do a session in Maida Vale the other day with his band that included Ravi Coltrane.  FlyLo himself, I think, is Ravi's nephew.

Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, died yesterday at age 69. He sung "Willie the Pimp"; the only track with vocals on this album.

    His other great jazzy albums

I checked out The Grand Wazoo and Sleep Dirt today.  Enjoyed them more than Hot Rats.  Just the right mix of weirdness and good jazzfunk the whole way through.  Cloud-free summer day soundtrack to paradise type stuff.

I've been trying to get into Jazz recently. Miles Davis is great - I loved "Kind of Blue".

I tend to be receptive to the more modern stuff, like Jazz fusion. The Japanese have a great scene:
