It was reported today that a young Christian woman in Pakistan has been sentenced to death for the crime of blasphemy. She has also been fined £700 which is two and a half years wages in her job as a field labourer. The crime was in engaging in a discussion with Muslim neighbours who wished to convert her to Islam, they took offence at a mild remark of hers and apparently set the men onto her and her children. She was beaten and imprisoned. There is currently another similar case ongoing in Lahore.

The blasphemy laws of President Zia Ul-Haq in Pakistan have been exploited to persecute non-Muslims for many years now. They are commonly used to blackmail or dispossess victims who may be condemned on nothing more than a false rumour of tearing a koran page.

This commonwealth country, receiving aid in billions from the west while plotting actions against neighbouring India such as the Mumbai massacre two years ago, is guilty of human rights violations that need to be stopped.
The Pakistani minorities,- Ahmadi Muslims, Christians and Hindus are being treated as pariahs in their own country. We should do anything in our power to help them to secure their equal treatment under the law. Maybe the threat of turning off the flow of financial aid would concentrate minds.

Blasphemy laws are used in Pakistan to persecute anyone from a non Muslim background who gets uppity against Muslims in various social situations. A Christian or Hindu or Ahmaddiya is in dispute with a Muslim over something, Muslim rounds up a mob and says that they blasphemed, boom, its over.

Hard-line Muslims protest against pardon for Pakistani Christian woman sentenced to death

Supporters of a Pakistani religious group rally, Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010 in Lahore, Pakistan, to condemn the release of a Christian woman Asia Bibi who had been sentenced to death. The case against Bibi, which started with a spat over people of different religions drinking from the same cup, has renewed calls for reform of Pakistan's blasphemy law, which critics say have been used to settle grudges, persecute minorities and fan religious extremism. Placard reads "We are custodian of the sanctity of Prophet.

Asia Bibi Is Our Sister says the JOKER

    Quote
... and we Pakistanis need to stand by her.   I endorse capital punishment for those who bash Islam and its sacred symbols. And no one bashes Islam in Pakistan.   Certainly not our Pakistani Christian brothers and sisters whose forefathers played a great role in Pakistan Independence Movement.

We own and defend our great religion and our great Prophet. But harassing a poor Pakistani Christian woman in the name of blasphemy is not justice. The great, fair-minded leaders of Islam, like Omar and Ali, would never endorse this. Shame on these half-educated mullahs who can't offer a word of support to a weak and poor woman being wrongly accused of blasphemy.

Would anyone dare utter a word against our great religion in our country, let alone a poor and weak woman who earns a living as a domestic helper?

We need Omar R.A.'s and Ali R.A.'s justice in this case. And we Pakistani Muslims must force half-educated clergy in groups such as Sunni Tehreek [I have more respect for Jamaat Islami and Tanzeem Islami] to stop making uneducated comments in this case. We are no good if we can't protect the weak and the wrongly accused among us. Unfortunately, because of the inflammatory statements by the uneducated, a minority of westernized and secular-minded NGOs, funded by foreign money, are seizing this opportunity to bash Pakistan and Islam. PPPP Senator Sherry Rehman wants to abolish the blasphemy law. That's fine. But she never uttered a word against the injustice done to Dr. Aafia Siddiqui? No comparison between her case and that of Asia's. The point is that the few westernized and secularist Pakistanis will try to seize this case to bash Pakistan and our great religion.  Asia needs our help against a stupid law and a fake case. But the champions of her case must be Muslim scholars first and foremost, and if not then all the rest of Pakistanis who know how great and tolerant and open-minded Islam is even if these half-educated mullahs know nothing about it.

Blasphemy law was originally enacted against a sect, Qadiyanis, who claimed Mohammad, peace be upon him, is not the last Prophet. Ordinary good-hearted Pakistanis are misled by the mullahs into believing this law is somehow a hedge against Islam-bashers in the West, such as the people behind the infamous Danish cartoons. That's not true. Our laws can't be implemented on those outside Pakistan. And no one inside Pakistan can dare insult Islam. Case closed.

We will never be secular. We are modern, and we are Muslim and Islam has always been a big-hearted religion. This is our opportunity to prove otherwise to others in the world who heard the ignorant statements of a few mullahs in this case. These mullahs need to be told to shut up. We defend our religion. And we do this by not tolerating a word against our religion and by defending the innocent and the wrongly accused.

So going back to Asia Bibi and Blasphemy laws ., That good looking Rafia Zakaria   from US of A writes something new that I didn't knew about this case ., let me add her words here

The news reports say it was a spat. Aasia Bibi, a 45-year-old woman in the village of Nankana Sahib, was sent to fetch water. When she brought it, some of the Muslim women labourers working in the fields said they would not drink water collected by a Christian. The ensuing events are a matter of contention.

According to Ashiq Masih, Aasia Bibi’s husband who is also a field labourer, his wife took offence and asked ‘are we not human?’ The incident took place in June last year but the actual case against Aasia Bibi was not launched until five days later.

    Quote
This month, over a year after the incident, a trial court in Nankana Sahib sentenced Aasia Bibi to death under Section 295 C of the Blasphemy Act.

Delivering his decision, Judge Naveed stated that there were “no mitigating circumstances” in the case and there was “no chance” that Aasia Bibi had been falsely implicated. According to documents filed in the case, Aasia Bibi’s accusers alleged that she had defamed the Quran and the Holy Prophet (PBUH). Since her sentence of death by hanging was handed down, her case has grabbed headlines both within Pakistan and abroad with top officials looking into the matter. Speaking to an audience in Vatican City some days ago, Pope Benedict XVI urged freedom for Aasia Bibi. Human rights organisations in Pakistan and abroad are also circulating petitions asking President Zardari to grant clemency to Aasia Bibi and cancel her death sentence.

Unfortunate vestiges of caste-based beliefs that have no basis in Islam, these prejudices provoke the mistreatment of non-Muslims. The perpetuation of these practices thus constructs the foundation on which further persecution of minorities can be readily justified. If non-Muslims are not good enough to drink from the same cup or eat from the same plate, how can their account of events ever take precedence over those of believing Muslims alleging that they have committed blasphemy?

well you can read it all at the links., But what is interesting to note here is that

1). Aasia Bibi  was in Jail for a years or so.,

2). Her case came out to Judge a week back or so and the guy sentenced her to death with in a day .,

     Pathetic courts and justice systems.,

The other surprising thing is that good looking  lady with these words
    Quote
Unfortunate vestiges of caste-based beliefs that have no basis in Islam

effectively blaming Hinduism/paganism of Pakistan where these Muslims came from so they are keeping  those Caste prejudices although they are Muslims..

For that itself, I say,   all these Muslim women  who accused blasphemy on    Asia Bibi   should be put in to burkha and in to jail  as they are practicing paganism perpetuated caste system in the Pakistan society  before dealing with Asia Bibi   case.,

Look at This Bearded Brain dead Old Rogue   Maulana Yousef Qureshi  says "he  pays 6000$ for killing Asia bibi.."

Maulana Yousef Qureshi (R) addresses a rally in Peshawar, the hardline, pro-Taliban cleric offered a reward for anyone who kills Aasia Bibi

    http://www.dawn.com/2010/12/03/peshawar-cleric-calls-for-aasia-to-be-killed.html

    Quote
PESHAWAR: Here is a most illegal, most violent and most un-Islamic statement by an extremist Deobandi mullah (‘Maulana’ Yousuf Qureshi) of a major mosque in Peshawar. This mullah is notorious for his pro-Taliban and pro-Imran Khan views, is a senior member of the Jamaat-e-(Ghair)Islami, and is also known to have direct links with a local commander of Pakistan Army. This hateful creature is one of the most ‘learned’ students of Mufti Taqi Usmani of Karachi, the spiritual leader of Afghani and Pakistani Taliban.

According to Surah Al-Maidah, this man is inciting to violence and spreading mischief in the land (fasaad fil arz), hence according to Islamic sharia, he deserves the harshest punishment.

    In Surah Al-Maidah, Allah says:
    Quote
       32. Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land – it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind. And indeed, there came to them Our Messengers with clear proofs, evidences, and signs, even then after that many of them continued to exceed the limits (e.g. by doing oppression unjustly and exceeding beyond the limits set by Allâh by committing the major sins) in the land!.

        33. The recompense of those who wage war against Allâh and His Messenger and do mischief in the land is only that they shall be killed or crucified or their hands and their feet be cut off on the opposite sides, or be exiled from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and a great torment is theirs in the Hereafter.

We support an ET reader’s offer who announced to place a reward of equal amount for any pakistan police officer, lawyers or judge who could put this terrorist mullah Yousuf Qureshi in Jail till Aisa bibi is released.

We demand that Chief Justice of Pakistan (who is notorious for his penchant for suo moto actions on every issue on this planet) must pay some attention to this matter too.

We also demand that the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa must order immediate arrest of this violent mullah (of course after seeking due permission from his masters in GHQ).

This fanatic cleric must be put in jail indefinitely for inciting to violence and creating harassment for religious minorities in Pakistan.

Blasphemy case: Masjid imam offers reward to kill Aasia

        Source: Express Tribune

PESHAWAR: Maulana Yousuf Qureshi, an imam of a major mosque in Peshawar on Friday offered a reward for anyone who kills Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman sentenced to death by a court on charges of blasphemy.

Qureshi offered a Rs500,000 reward and warned the government against any move to abolish or change the blasphemy law.
The sentence against Asia Bibi has renewed debate about the law which critics say is used to persecute religious minorities, fan religious extremism and settle personal scores.

“We will strongly resist any attempt to repeal laws which provide protection to the sanctity of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” Qureshi told a rally.

“Anyone who kills Aasia will be given Rs500,000 in reward from Masjid Mohabat Khan,” he said referring to his mosque.

While Qureshi is not believed to have a wide following, comments by clerics can provoke a violent response and complicate government efforts to combat religious extremism and militancy.

Qureshi, cleric who has been leading congregation at the 17th century Mohabat Khan mosque for decades, later told Reuters he was determined to see her killed.

“We expect her to be hanged and if she is not hanged then we will ask mujahideen and Taliban to kill her.”

In 2006, Qureshi and his followers announced rewards amounting to over $1 million for anyone who killed Danish cartoonists who drew caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that had enraged Muslims worldwide.

After her conviction, Aasia appealed to President Asif Ali Zardari to pardon her, saying she had been wrongly accused by neighbours due to a personal dispute.

Last week, a minister said an initial inquiry into the case showed she had not committed blasphemy. The Lahore High Court last month prevented Zardari from granting a pardon and ruled that the High Court should be allowed to decide her appeal.

“No president, no parliament and no government has any right to interfere in the commandants of Islam. Islamic punishment will be implemented at all costs,” said Qureshi.

Sandul Bibi recently met with VOM friends in Pakistan to celebrate one year since her release from prison. Sandul was arrested in October, 2009, and falsely charged with tearing pages from the Quran. During the time of celebration Sandul and the other believers took time out to pray specifically for Asia Bibi, another Christian in Pakistan who is currently facing a death sentence for alleged blasphemy against Mohammed.
