  • Eiffel Tower evacuated after bomb alert
     OP - September 14, 2010, 08:59 PM

    Quote
PARIS (AFP) – Police evacuated some 2,000 people from the Eiffel Tower and the park surrounding the Paris landmark on Tuesday following a bomb alert, the police said.

"The company managing the Eiffel Tower received an anonymous telephone call around 8:20 pm (1820 GMT)," a Paris police official told AFP.

"Special units, one with sniffer dogs, went to the site to search the Eiffel Tower floor by floor," the official said.

    "Around 2,000 people were evacuated."

The 324-metre (1,063-feet) high tower has three floors open to visitors and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world.

The tower, which also has two restaurants, normally closes at 11:00 pm.

A police officer earlier said about 25,000 people were in the area at the time of the alert. The evacuation began shortly before 9:00 pm.

The people evacuated, mostly French and foreign tourists, were asked to stay on the nearby Seine river banks and the Champ de Mars park to the east, and the tower area was cordoned off, an AFP reporter on the scene said.

Around a dozen police vehicles could be seen inside the cordoned-off area.

The Eiffel Tower was built in just two years by engineer Gustave Eiffel as the centerpiece of the 1889 world fair in Paris, on the centenary of the French revolution.

    Reaction to Face Veil Ban?
  • Re: Eiffel Tower evacuated after bomb alert
     Reply #1 - September 14, 2010, 09:27 PM

Terrorism won't stop the face veil ban, nor score any points for the Islamic fundamentalists, but I'll tell you what will:

Mass civil disobedience by women wearing the veil in public and provoking arrest or heavy-handed police tactics. Will make the French government look like thugs, help the whole "the veil liberates women" propaganda by having women out on the street protesting and being arrested and/or beat up, making them look like real feminist warriors, and may very well result in the French government reversing their stance, thus handing militant Islam a major propaganda victory.

Most of the radical Muslim leaders may be stupid thugs inclined to terrorism or mindless violence, but not all of them are, and sooner or later someone will think of this and implement it-- someone may already be doing planning and organizing for something like this. You watch this shit backfire on the French government. Just watch.

    fuck you

Nah, I dont think it will.  And if it does, the police will be prepared & quench any unrest quickly. The French police are not pussies like their British counterparts.

Read what I wrote again-- in a civil disobedience strategy like the one I outlined you wouldn't want the cops to be pussies, just the opposite.

You'd want quick & affirmative action also - either way I dont think much will come out of it, well nothing there are not used to dealing with.  Their muslims there are also not as well organised, or as religious either.

France is a statist nation, so dont expect a reaction like you would expect in UK & USA.

I agree. France has gone hard core. chucking out romas. They've got a lot to contend to with with the pension / retirement issues as well. But i can defiantly  see them laying the smackdown on any group that disagrees

If you ask me to define anything i will slap you with my pimp hand and make you cry like a biatch.

So did the British in India, so did the police and Klan in the American South. You guys really don't understand the strategic goals of civil disobedience, do you?

Dunno about France, but the gypsies (I assume that is what they've become) in other parts of Europe (particularly Eastern Europe)  are the ones commonly associated with drugs & crime

     Crystal Ball

I predict that in the medium to long term, the niqab will become a non-issue as the secular state gets larger in France, and this literalist bunch of Muslims metamorphasise into the next generation of modern Muslims/agnostics who dont give a monkeys butt about traditional Islamic values.

What the French have done here might expedite this process, as the Muslims in France arent as religious/outspoken/organised as those we have in the UK and other countries.

Why are they specifically targeting Romas? why not ALL illegal immigrants indiscriminately?

They are targeting gypsies because they steal, robb at gunpoint and they fight the police if they can. If they can't, they scream blody murder.
BUT they are NOT illegal imigrants. Romania and Bulgaria are part of the European Union. They have the right to go anywhere in the union, they may not have the right to work .
It's still illegal to live on land that you don't own I assume and that's the case with the gypsies there. The French didn't force them to leave, they just gave them 300 euros and a plane ticket if they did.
Quote from a gypsy after landing"Well see if we can find work here, but if not we'll go back."

On a side note, not all gypsies are dirt poor, and not all of them steal. But it's not the same dichotomy.

I don't understand the mindset of our italian cousins. They are upset with the gypsies and the africans and Berlusconi is leading the hate mongering.
This is a man who eluded the justice on technicalities several times, with proved relations with the Mafia, and friends with the guy who billed Italy for 900 meter kilometers of highway.
    Sarkozy was his lawyer once.
I'm not making this shit up.

Well, I don´t know about France, but here in Denmark, where we have just deported 23 Romas, part of the explanation could be this :

Two out of three put before a magistrate are foreigners

Two out of three put before a magistrate in Copenhagen are of foreign descent. Criminal Eastern Europeans are the most frequent guests of the court.

As much as 68 % of all arrestees in Copenhagen who come up before a magistrate are of  foreign descent.

Which is about two thirds of all the accused.

This is what a report from the Copenhagen Police, covering the period 2007-2009, which ekstrabladet.dk has seen, shows.

The figure is from 2009 and the report shows that since 2007 there has been a steady increase in the number of accused of  foreign origin in the court :

In 2009, 1,844 persons were charged in the magistrate court, out of which 1247
    were of foreign origin.
In 2008 the number was 1848 . 1201 were of foreign descent.
In 2007 the number was 1715 . 1072 were of foreign descent.

    Eastern European criminals

It is especially Eastern Europeans who are represented in the ugly statistics and of the Eastern Europeans, it is especially Romanians, who are the problem.

482 of the accused in the court last year were Eastern Europeans – out of which 169 were Romanians. This corresponds to the Romanians representing 35 percent of the Eastern European criminals.

    - It is far too high figures when we look at the total number of accused persons of foreign origin. But it also says something about the poverty you find in countries like Romania.

Many poverty - criminals go to Western Europe to earn money and it is a problem throughout the Nordic region, said police inspector Svend Foldager, Copenhagen police.
Eastern Europeans are notably behind many domestic burglaries and the picture is the same in the other Nordic capitals, says Svend Foldager.

    - But our cooperation with the Romanian Police and the other Eastern European countries is improving, so our possibility for intervening is better, he says.

10 years in prison for the Romanian ringleader behind the deadly violence against 76 -year-old during home robbery in Skovby . He and the rest of the gang will be deported after completing the sentence.

Four Romanian men were in the Court of Horsens sentenced to lengthy prison sentences for fatal violence in one of the most brutal home robberies in Denmark.

At the robbery in Skovby in October 2008 a 76- year-old man was killed and his wife
bound and severely beaten , but she survived.

Why such brutality ? It cannot have been that difficult to overpower two old people in their seventies.

The killing of the 42 -year-old Norwegian stewardess Vera Vildmyren cause several chiefs  in the Copenhagen Policeforce to warn that the problems with criminals Eastern Europeans - particularly Romanians - are growing, writes Politiken Saturday .

"The open borders policy means that we are being overrun by Eastern Europeans . It is a huge problem . They are committing bank robberies , home robberies , serious theft , begging, shoplifting everything , "said homicide chief in the Copenhagen Police , Ove Dahl, to Politiken .

According to Ove Dahl some of the criminal Eastern Europeans live in Denmark , while others go back and forth. He warns specifically against Romanian criminals and encourages people to do what they are asked if they are exposed to a robbery.

" Romanians are unscrupulous . They will kill for  a couple hundred DKK . It is a completely different culture , "says Ove Dahl.

I dont think there should be a general round up of any group of people , that is the thing leaving a nasty smell about this, however I do think that the provisions in the charter that allow one eurozone country to deport and disallow entry to anyone convicted of a serious crime , theft ,assualt etc  would be enough to allay peoples fears of a mass crime wave from any one group and to give incentive to those wishing to stay in that country to not commit crime

According to the polls only 1.6 % of Americans are athiests. So what gives you the right to call the other 80% morons?'

Ah the Romanians are the problem...
Well on the gypsy issue, I myself and others here are kind of split. For one thing it's annoying (and at times dangerous) that we are confused with the gypsies. Romani and Romania are perhaps too similar.
On the other hand it's amusing to see the French deal with the same problem we had. Twenty years ago Romania was this racist country who oppressed it's gypsies. How the communist party did this and that and after the revolution we are so backward. Well fuck them and their baguettes. Let the mob lawyer Sarkozy deal with it.

To be fair, in the article Paloma quoted I can't tell by their names, but they sound ethnic Romanian. If it's any consolation we live with this shit too. I myself am not afraid to walk on the streets at night but we do have violent criminals.
