The most liberal Arab country is Lebanon followed by Syria

How come?  With Lebanon is it down to Jewish influence, I would have thought religion would have been strong & highlighted due to the conflict

    What Jewish influence?
Prostitution is legalized and regulated in Lebanon. It is the ME's center of gay rights activism. Hijab is uncommon among Sunnis. And even their Shias are kinda laid-back religiously albeit ultra right-wing when it comes to politics.

Lebanon has long been a trading hub (since the Phoenician times) as well as multi-faith (40% Christian, which was higher before 1947 and influx of Palestinian refugees, and Shia and Sunni Muslims are about evenly split, 28% each, then the Druze), therefore more cosmopolitan and tolerant.

    Hi Zodiac.  Smiley

Not only is there not a shred of evidence for the existence of any gods, much less any sky critters, but there is actually no reason to believe any exists. The concept of god is inherently inconsistent; this "god" has to account for its own existence. If theists are going to say "he's always existed", then I will say the universe has always existed, in some form or another. You see, what theists do is put this "god" into the formula to neutralize the problem of existence, but they are actually making the problem even more complicated. When they say "goddidit", they're not giving any explanation; they're throwing in a lazy answer that is merely an unsubstantiated claim. Hence, we will eventually end up with two problems instead of one: Our initial problem (existence), and now we also have to account for the existence of this god. According to Occam's razor (and common sense, really), we should always go with the simplest explanation.

    Nice point.

People try to elbow god into the universe.

"We don't know. So therefore, it must be god."

But it can be a different case with Muslims, because they outright say they know.

They themselves believe in it arbitrarily, and then try to scrap together whatever miracles, signs, numerology, etc.

They never actually know it's true, but they just want it to be.

"We don't know. So therefore, it must be god."

i find at the simplest level the rationale most often tends to boil down to:

Something must have created everything = God
This god would have sent us a message=Religion
Makes logical sense there is one God = Abrahmism
Islam is the only unchanged no-nonsense final message=Islam

Exactly. Appeal To Consequences logical fallacy -- just because you cannot "understand" a universe without a god doesn't automatically poof your god into existence.

    Pathetic.

So why do you think Syria & Lebanon are different to the other Arab states?

Large Christian populations (40%, 10% respectively). Little reception to Wahabism. A legacy of the social/cultural norms overriding the religious ones....etc

Iraq before 1990 was as liberal as Lebanon and definitely more liberal than all other Arab countries. Drinking was a norm, minijobs, nightclubs, high levels of female employment...etc.
In the 70s, every Thursday our border crossing with Kuwait would get congested because of the thousands of Kuwaitis who come to drink and listen to music in our clubs and discos. And this is Basra we're talking about. The centre of the Shia south.

Still till this day, the degree of mixing between genders on our campuses is unrivaled by Egypt or Jordan (speaking from first-hand experience). Of course after 1990 and the sanctions only the middle class maintained its moderation and relative liberalism. Our working class has become more religious. Which is why currently, Syria and Kuwait have become more liberal.

BTW, Saudis still call us Iraqis "people pf bad manners" "heathens"....etc.  Which is something I take pride in  Afro

Oh yes, of course. But the black & white image showed him as an actor. In fact I thought he was one of the officers of the Titanic for some reason. Now that GING have replaced it with a color and a close-up one, it is clear.  Afro
