"They are not a religion. They are a political, militaristic group," Bob Shelton, a 76-year-old retiree who lives in the area, told The Associated Press.
Shelton was among several hundred demonstrators who recently wore "Vote for Jesus" T-shirts and carried signs that said "No Sharia law for USA!," referring to the Islamic code of law.
Others took their opposition further, spray painting a sign announcing the "Future site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro" and tearing it up.
Earlier this summer opponents criticized the planned mosque at hearings held by the Rutherford County Commission, as supporters held prayer vigils.
At one such prayer vigil, WTVF reported opponents speaking out against construction.
"No mosque in Murfreesboro. I don't want it. I don't want them here," Evy Summers said to WTVF. "Go start their own country overseas somewhere. This is a Christian country. It was based on Christianity."
As to the bolded, where have we heard this rhetoric before? Our good friend DH is fond of saying it, as are Ali Sina and his den of fearmongering Muslim-bashers at FFI. This meme has been making the rounds on the internet, being spread by the Robert Spencers, Geert Wilders, and Pam Gellers of the world. And, yes, to a lesser extent, the DHs, the Ali Sinas, the Rashnas, the FinallyFrees, the Ansar al-Zindiqis, and the Baals.
Justify religious discrimination with the nifty trick of saying Islam isn't really a religion at all. And here's what it leads to-- arson attacks on mosques. Proud of yourselves? As proud as the anti-Semites who whip up hatred and fear of Jews are when a synagogue is firebombed? Yes, I put the blame on you and people like you. You can condemn the act as much as you like, but those of you spreading fear and hatred of Muslims are just as guilty as the guy who lit the match.
Then there's the cabbie who was knifed in NYC for being Muslim-- it's only gonna get worse, folks.
