  • Suggestion: implement a spell checker
     OP - August 24, 2010, 03:25 AM

    Hi.

A while back I used to post on the Why Wont God Heal Amputees forum. They had a very useful spell checker option for whenever you posted. It worked very well and I used it often (which is more than you can say about the Christians who joined to defend their faith).

So my suggestion is that you install something like it on this forum! I'm sure many would appreciate it, especially those of us who don't have English as a first language. Hopefully it isn't too hard to install.

If you want to look closer at it.

Any browser worth using has spell checking built in. It's pointless trying to install one on the server these days.

I love Opera.  Afro   Only ever use IE if I absolutely have to.

Actually I use Firefox, but I find the spell checker there incredibly annoying.
Oh well, can't have it all I suppose.

IE does in fact have a spell checker (iespell) but I never use it.  It still requires clicking on it, and then clicking each time  it puts forward a false suggestion.

Think its quicker to read through the post if you could be bothered tbh

Why is it annoying? Maybe there is an extension to make it better?

Often I don't use English and it identifies just about everything as misspelled.  Roll Eyes
I just can't be bothered with turning it on and off all the time. Yes, I'm lazy!

I don't get why most spellcheckers are not multi-language, with automatic language detection.

After all, if you have the wordlists of some given languages it would be trivial to auto-detect which language is being used in a given moment.

Do not look directly at the operational end of the device.

Sure, and then we'd be hearing about complaints of how stupid the algorithm for detecting the right language is.

Sure, and then we'd be hearing about complaints of how stupid the algorithm for detecting the right language is.

Well, it cannot fail too much.

Check with language 1, calculate the number of mispellings, check with language 2, calculate the number of mispellings, etc...
And pick the one with the lowest ^_^

The worst that can happen is a false negative with some errors going undetected cause they looked like another language.

Do not look directly at the operational end of the device.

It would be best if the user could select the allowed languages from a list.
That way the chance of fail is negligible.

Do not look directly at the operational end of the device.

I hate the Firefox spellchecker as it always always gives the US English version, not the original English English spelling.

Set it to British English then?

The sort of English setting? Too mad there isn't a espanto or a leet speak option.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Install the British English version of Firefox then. http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.6.8&os=win&lang=en-GB parrot

Personally I don't much care because I can tell when it's trying to speak Yankglish at me so I just ignore those ones. You can get FF in all sorts of languages though. http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html

This is why I don't think it's worth trying to install a spellchecker on the server. You have to click the thing anyway, which is much the same as using the existing Preview function and checking the post that way. OTOH, if using any browser except IE the built-in spellcheck will highlight stuff as you type without any need for clicking anything. Much better.

Didnt think it would be able to do that, as it would mean it would be running after each character is typed, but that would make the difference between me using a spell checker or not - will check if IE has something like this  Afro

Why are you still using Internet Explorer? It's easily the worst browser out there.

In pretty much every comparison IE comes out worst.

Those test are measuring in milliseconds, so there is not that much difference between them all.

There's more useful things to implement than a spell checker - better mobile theming and an ice cream maker being a couple from the top of my head. Especially the ice cream maker.

I still have IE8 installed and believe me, the difference in speed, stability and feature-set is very noticeable.

Yeah, I know - I have FF installed too and it is quicker & feature rich.  However IE has its advantages too.

You can install dictionaries for multiple languages in Firefox. Then you just have to switch languages (It's easy via context menu)
