    So, I'm teaching myself Arabic and I wrote a haiku in English and Arabic.

    I sit here cramming
    Eyes transfixed on these two pages.
    Writing these phrases:

    انا احب جيمي منهم

    فلنأخذ مثلا القيام برحلة الى الشاطئ

    يقرأ بين السطور

    A radiant smile,
    Finally at perfection.
    Wishing he could see.


    The Arabic is supposed to read:

    Jimmy whom I love
    Let us go to the beach
    Read between the lines.


    I'm still learning how to write.

    Like most Muslims, I can read arabic but I can't speak or understand it.

    Ah, okay. I always wanted to learn Arabic, but my stint in Islam didn't really help. It was until after I apostaticized I learned it.

    I'd like to learn arabic too.  When I refute the Quran the apologists wouldn't be able to say... "You don't know arabic!"  Smiley

    lets take an example taking a trip to the beach
    he is reading between the lines
    [13:36] <Fimbles> anything above 7 inches
    [13:37] <Fimbles> is wacko
    [13:37] <Fimbles> see
    [13:37] <Fimbles> you think i'd enjoy anything above 7 inches up my arse?

    Wow that's strange, I thought if you can read it you can speak it. I can speak it but I can't read.

    Well, not really, it makes sense. You can read by knowing what each symbol looks and sounds like, but to speak it you have to be able understand the words that the sounds represent. Someone has to teach you the meanings to speak it, a lot of non-arabic people don't know the meanings and just make their kids learn the sounds of the arabic alphabet etc.

    That never made ANY sense to me. As a kid I'd always ask why I was being asked to read it in a language I don't even understand.
