    Why this discrepancy ?

Perhaps the board count includes banned members, whilst the active (viewing) enumeration only includes members with permission to access the board. 258 bans or account deletions doesn't sound unreasonable, considering the number of sockpuppets certain previous members used.

Interesting. I'm not sure, but I guess the first number comes from a counter, which only indicates what the next (database) row ID will be, and the second number says how many rows are actually in the users table. The discrepancy can occur because of deletions.

There are lots of members in the members list with zero posts. If the list were to show only members who had posted, the number of members would be far far lower.

No, the list (I think) shows all members, that's why there are more members in the list. It makes sense this way. No?

Read the OP again, there are less members in the list.

By the way, recent spike in members ... bots or real posters? Interesting MSN ID's on some of the new accounts created e.g. r.f.n.x.g.y.u.c.r.m.r.d.gtyokrxooaypqzasyl@gmail.com

May be a new SMF spambot floating around.

Nah, I Think if you plotted the same graph on new posts or new topics during these months, you would reproduce the same spike.  I think it is down to the site becoming more & more popular.

Why the exponential rise during these months though is an interesting question I would like to put out.

Actually I take that back, the spike is disproportional in size to the number of new members.  Your probably right, must be some bot or something, although I dont know how they could as the bot would need to be able to read the disguised characters, as part of the initial security screens Huh?

yup the discrepancy is due to one counter including all registered accounts from the start of the forum and the other counter only including accounts that are not banned. It's a very minor bug in the software and not really worth worrying about.

The spike in members is partially due to a wave of spambots (they tend to come in waves).
