  • Moderator's skillz, tips and how to needed!
     OP - July 20, 2010, 06:44 AM

I need to cut out some posts (they are about scientific errors in the quran) which where initially posted in another thread (Grammar mistakes of the Quran) and insert them into the relavant thread. Can I do that? Or do I have to cope and paste then remove the original ones? But that way the original poster's name and avatar wont be transfered! So what to do now?

Can't you split and then merge?

What Abood said. Split the topic, then merge the split bit (which will be a new topic) into the other thread. If you want to get the hang of it make a couple of test threads to mess around with.

ETA: Hang on and I'll make some screenshots. Wink

Thanks Abood, I am experimenting with that. Managed to split the relavant posts and now need to merge them together.... OK I am getting there!

I was a moderator once and managed to delete an entire topic accidentally when I tried to split different threads then merge them together. Cheesy

And Abood, deleting one topic is nothing. You should read the story of how we came to have the "Forum Archives".  Cheesy

    Here RIBS, read this: http://www.councilofexmuslims.com/index.php?topic=3525.0

The inner story is that in standard form the admin template has various options on the maintenance page. At that stage our database was still small enough that we could back up in admin (way too big now). There is an option to delete all the moved topic notices older than three days. I usually do this to keep the boards a bit less cluttered. The problem is that in the list of checkboxes is another option to delete all posts older than three days, and for some idiotic reason that is the one that is selected by default. You can guess what happened.

Anyway that was an interesting day. I learned how to restore databases.  dance

I also happened to find a major bug in phpMyAdmin, which is why the Archives content is a bit patchy. For those who want to know, phpMyAdmin imports and exports in an unusual format and will make a syntax error out of every damned apostrophe in the database if the backup was made with another tool (which ours was). I know how to get around that now but have never bothered with the archives.

I'm going to merge those topics/posts back into our main db later this year. I already have a cleaned up backup with just the good bits ready to go. I've also edited that fucking admin template so it is idiot proof, and made sure the new release of SMF doesn't have similar traps in it.  Afro

grin12 Well at the time we had the FFI guys here and they're as paranoid as hell. I could just see the rumour mill going off. Ygalg had started a rumour about us being hacked before this over at FFI (it was complete bullshit of course) so I just knew they'd go nuts again.  Roll Eyes
