Here RIBS, read this:
http://www.councilofexmuslims.com/index.php?topic=3525.0The inner story is that in standard form the admin template has various options on the maintenance page. At that stage our database was still small enough that we could back up in admin (way too big now). There is an option to delete all the moved topic notices older than three days. I usually do this to keep the boards a bit less cluttered. The problem is that in the list of checkboxes is another option to delete all posts older than three days, and for some idiotic reason that is the one that is selected by default. You can guess what happened.
Anyway that was an interesting day. I learned how to restore databases.
I also happened to find a major bug in phpMyAdmin, which is why the Archives content is a bit patchy. For those who want to know, phpMyAdmin imports and exports in an unusual format and will make a syntax error out of every damned apostrophe in the database if the backup was made with another tool (which ours was). I know how to get around that now but have never bothered with the archives.
I'm going to merge those topics/posts back into our main db later this year. I already have a cleaned up backup with just the good bits ready to go. I've also edited that fucking admin template so it is idiot proof, and made sure the new release of SMF doesn't have similar traps in it.
