Well the thing is both support utf-8 but running an SMF site on utf-8 seems a tad iffy sometimes. If your hack isn't a performance hit and we only need to increase the character limit for titles then we may be better off just doing that and not trying to convert the forum to utf-8 as such.

ETA: Or more specifically, it's the utf-8 conversions that seem to be a bit iffy.

No it doesn't. Unicode support for 2.0 is no different to for 1.1.x.

Huh? It doesn't? Why then did the German forum I ran for a while here support it?

    @Mods
Now are you gonna replace the English thread titles with transliterated Arabic, or what? Smiley

Seems a bit silly to me - we really should be able to have Arabic titles.

    Can't it be done?

    Currently, no.
Transliterated titles would be better than English ones atm, don't you think?

    Transliteration is very informal.

I personally don't like transliteration - but if others think it's OK, I'll go with that.

Okay, wait. I think I can just increase the title character limit.

Can you also make the default text size bigger. Size 10 is far too small - it seems to be even smaller than the default English text.

    Here have a look:

    هذا النص صغير جدا

I can see that the Arab Atheist forum has a default size that is similar to size 14.

    I think that's a decent size:

    هذا النص مضبوط

That's something for osmanthus to do. It's pretty easy. We should have a cloned theme already with RTL direction. I don't know what he's waiting for. Smiley

He's been asleep you twat. Tongue

Ok, seriously, if you need to know where the character limit is set I'll take a look and/or ask over in the team boards at SMF. Shouldn't be hard to sort. Default font size is easy. Will do that as part of the theme.

UTF-8 support: I don't know how you installed the German site (and if you're not worrying about it any more we should probably scrap it) but SMF will support any language in either ISO or UTF-8 format depending on which languages files are loaded and which languages are enable in admin. The catch is that the ISO support seems to be better than the UTF-8 support, particularly when it comes to doing conversions from ISO to UTF-8. This is why I'm kind of in the "if it aint fucked don't try and fix it coz it might get more fucked" mindset.

If your hack isn't a noticeable performance hit I'd prefer to just stay with what we have and make a few basic tweaks like increased character limits, etc.

But it is fucked. Anything other than Unicode is crap these days.

I fixed the issue partially. (In Post.php @453)
Thread titles can be 5 times longer now. Don't abuse pls. Smiley

I still can't get the whole title in - even the short one:

    الله الغني ام الفقير؟

Won't fit in without being chopped off and some garbles text.

Needs to be fixed in the theme template. I'm off to sleep now. See ya tomorrow.

Oh, but I managed to do it in the two threads about Grammar mistakes and Scientific errors in the Quran. Strange. Try now, may be Aziz or Os fixed it after you tried earlier!

Ok so adding dir="rtl" sorts most of it but some layout is still a bit broken. I've only checked in Firefox too so I expect that other (ahem) browsers will provide some fun and games. I'll sort most of it on local host before uploading.

One thing is that the table layout is NOT reversed. This may be because the test site has all English threads and so the algorithm you mentioned may be overriding the reversed table layout due to the amount of LTR text strings. Might be ok in an all-Arabic board. Will have to see.

From my laptop (Toshiba) that has Arabic language in it, I can title the threads in Arabic no problem. But if I use my Ipad (has no Arabic language support in it) the Arabic titles comes up truncated and lots of &%$ signs added. I use online Arabic Keyboards usually to type, or copy and paste from the same thread to modify the title.

For example, before I loged in through my Toshiba few minutes ago, I tried to modify the "Arabic Forum Rules" title using Ipad and and did not work until I used the laptop. Not sure if this help or not!  wacko

Hm, don't know what I can do about that...

Btw, Google has this helpful tool: http://google.com/transliterate
It's an input method. Switch to Arabic, type in English characters, then press enter and the text will be turned into Arabic text.
