  • Sex, Taboo, Maile bonding in Islamic societies
     OP - July 06, 2010, 02:30 AM

I have some questions maybe some of you can explain to me.

I know that in some southeast asian and middle eastern cultures,
(especially where women are supressed), that male bonding, and
sexual tension is not necessarly uncommon.  Such as touching,
holding hands, dancing together, spending hours away from their
wives *edit/typo correction* (especially in arranged marriages),
or adolescent boys discovering sexuality but have no idea about
relationships with women or even in close proximaty or access to them.

I was watching a series on "Middle Sexes" and one of the episodes
touched on this and rekindled my curiosity about the male/male
relationships in various areas of the world.  I have wanted to study
this at length (my passion for cultural anthropology) and am extremely
curious to know how you, if you came from a society where this is the
norm, dealt with it, how it affected you, your community, was this social
    norm... etc etc.

If i am way off the mark, please let me know too.  The following documentary
is extremely fascinating, and would recommend anyone interested in sexual
identity to watch the entire series.

There are more closet gays in Pakistan than anywhere else I've been.

    And I've looked.

thanks z10 for replying.  How do these men cope with their
religious convictions as muslims, and also, do they live in fear
of their lives because of the koranic punishment for male/male
relationships?  How far can they take it before they reap the
consequences of their desires and preferences?

I find it such a shame, that any human being, who really cannot
help the way they feel towards the same sex, have to live
covertly because of both social and relgious "norms".  But doesnt
their society condone their open affections with the same sex,
    i.e. holding hands, etc.

Also in that series, they did a test with men, who were hetrosexual
and had no problems with men/men relationships and also with
men who were homophobic.  The test was to measure their arousal
response to a gay video.  The results were, the ones with no problem
with gays were not very aroused by it.  However, the homophobic men
in MOST cases were definitely aroused by the video, but insisted they
were not, even though the measured results indicated they were.

Then i think about muslim women getting stoned, whipped, imprisoned,
divorced and their children taken away from them for ALLEGED infidelity/adultry.

To be fair, not many of those who partake in homosexual activities actually think of themselves as gays, it's just the easiest way to get off because there's no taboo of guys sleeping in the same bed.
Additionally, they have a very liberal attitude towards sin, everything can be forgiven if you repent and they all plan on repenting once they reach their 60s.

    ya
    homophobia is irrational
    for instance
the thought of two guys getting it on, ewwww that's soooo wrong
    yet
the thought of two chicks getting it on, mmmm possible threesome
it all comes down to one thing
    your own sexual security
    homophobes like to think
"I'm not gay, I'm not gay, I'm not gay..."
    that they won't be gay
    but only through sexual education
    and extensive experimentation
can they conclude whether they're gay or not

the sexual repression of religious societies is really quite sad

Very interesting that the homosexual behaviour isn't considered homosexual. The blatantly obvious paradox seems to pass by unnoticed. I guess human beings are masters at the art of convincing themselves that only they are exceptions to the rules.

Sexual suppression doesn bring out the strangeness in people.

Seeing the hand holding always made me feel weird. Quite a culture shock for me coz I was always used to the hetero men never touch attitude.

z10.... Thats what Dr.. Khan was saying in the video.  They dont even consider it as a "sexual act" just
a way of relieving themselves.  Except for the VJ guy and his "husband".  Next question is HOW did they
get married in a muslim fashion?Huh?  How could that even be possible?  Unless the Imam was gay?Huh?

coco... I remember when i went to my first nightclub in europe.  I was stunned to see all the
gals dancing with each other, and the guys dancing with themselves as well.  But then i thought,
this is great!  I can dance without having someone to ask me to dance LOL.  Then i noted that
guys use the opportunity to approach you on the dance floor rather than where you are seated LOL.
I actually learned to enjoy the experience.  First couple of times i was very self conscious but after
that, was good to go.    Afro  Besides it was definitely easier to scope out the cuties from the
    dance floor  Tongue

Bollocks, that's not homophobia, that's simply being true to what you like if you're straight.  I have no problem with gay people but I don't have to like watching two blokes make out and at the same time feel ashamed that I like the idea of two chicks doing it.   That's my nature.

Heck I personally find those 55 year old fatties who stroll about on the beach wearing G strings and bikinis quite revolting.  Doesn't mean that I have anything against them or that I'm going to stop them from doing it either.

so then, ras... according to this documentary (theres 11 videos) and that test they performed, you would have been the straight guy, who doesnt mind gays, and wouldnt have been turned on by the gay video... That is only what that test was about.. That homophobes actually tended to get excited from the vid, not the ones who didnt have a prob with gays.

All right I'll come clean, I didn't watch the video.  Shadizar's remarks reminded me of a certain attitude some seem to have that's all.

np ras  Smiley  my curiosity and interest in this is mainly from an
anthropological perspective, although I am also curious because
the koran and hadeeths are so extremely against this
behavior.  Like men are being killed (hung and stoned) for
this.  how do they differentiate between being gay, and
boys/men having sex with one another "for fun" or
    just to release stress, etc?

Shad... no worries, kick back and lets learn about this
