Im having trouble contacting TYT (the young turks).  They seem to have
a fairly large audience, too.  Can anyone help?

    excerpt:

The man involved, Zarkat Khan, has run away while the woman is in the custody of the court, according to residents in Kala Dhaka, a remote area of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

The death sentence, handed down in Manjakot village last month, will be carried out once the man is found, a member of the tribal court said.

The woman, whose name is being withheld at the request of human rights groups, is being held in a nearby village, according to campaigners. She is married and believed to have three children.

"As usual, it is the woman who is made to bear the brunt of such atrocious barbarism, injustice, and inhuman, un-Islamic sentences," said the Woman's Action Forum, a Pakistani non-governmental organisation. "Why is the provincial law enforcement system neither de jure nor de facto functional? Where are the women's protection mechanisms and institutions?"

Some locals believe the verdict will not be carried out but Maroof Khan, who said he sat on the tribal court, or jirga, that heard the case said the couple were guilty and must be punished. He said they would be shot, not stoned.

1: I wrote to Salma Yaqoob who immediately replied saying she was opposed to the stoning and asked how she could help
2: I wrote to Mina Ahadi and asked who Salma should contact in order to help from the UK
    3: I forwarded Mina's email to Salma
4: I wrote to 2 local TV news stations about the international protests on the 24th
5: I wrote to Maryam Namazie asking if there was a website on which people can organise these protests, and if not then maybe she should suggest one on her blog post
6: Posted the info on my facebook wall and asked others to do the same
7: Emailed PhilHellenes, bigf00t, aronra on youtube asking them if they would make a short video mentioning the international protests and ask their subscribers to mirror it

Net result, fuck all.  No email replies, and nobody on FB has followed suit, nothing.

I wonder what goes through the mind of each man, as they consciously pick
up a stone, and violently throws it.  I  wonder if these men block out the fear
that THEIR OWN sins may be found out.  Or do they fervorently carry out
the stoning, relieved any attention would be diverted off them.  What goes through
the mind of these men who cast stones?  Do they enjoy it?  Do they find some
kind of twisted gratification from it?  Do they go back and have a cup of mint tea
with their buddies afterwards and talk about it?  How do they resolve in their
own conscience, that they have just committed murder?

Its the same thoughts and feelings that go through the minds of a cheering and jeering wrestling fan or a kids gathering around and cheering on a fight. Getting pleasure from violence is a lot more common than most men (and women) will ever let on. It's a sort of release. In modern society most young males are smart enough to vent that energy through sports, violent video games, aggressive music and working out.

When you couple our primal bloodlust with religious laws, you get stonings.

No doubt the homo sapien has had a very violent past, and get
gratification at the suffering and murdering of others.  I could
never get into or understand pro wrestling mentality.  Ive watched,
merely for anthropological purposes, observing the crowd, the
horrible acting of the wrestlers lol, and yes, the bloodlust.
Primal instincs for many women also come out in the guise
of being turned on by the victor, primal urges of copulating,
not realizing its hardwired in their dna... the purpose is really for
    procreation with the biggest/strongest/smartest males.

Thats also why "raping" is usually followed by conquering and
pillaging.  SEROUS testosterone high from bloodlust. But also
passing on the genes of the stronger group, for a better chance
    of survival.

I wonder if "civility" is part of human evolution, as well, and we
havent quite gotten there yet, still alot of residual primal savagery
    in our dna.

Regardless, I hope this woman, and all the other women in her
shoes, awaiting their death sentances have a ray of hope, that
somehow their sentences can be overturned.   Cry

Chimps are more violent, bonobos are more sharing.  It's possible that their behaviour is due to the differences in availability of resources.  Chimps fight for food, bonobos actively share.

I think there is chimp and bonobo in all of us, circumstances feed one personality over the other - I'd like to think my bonobo would win over in such circumstances now that I have already matured.  Although if I were at the stoning of one of my loved ones and I had a machine gun I don't doubt for a second that I would voluntarily feed my inner chimp.

Just got this email this morning

    Quote from: MaryamNamazie
    Hi

I just wanted to tell you that a number of rallies and events are being held on 24 July 2010 – International Sakine Mohammadi Ashtiani Day: World Citizens against Stoning. You can see if there are any events in your area here and join in if possible: http://iransolidarity.blogspot.com/2010/07/rallies-for-international-sakine.html.

If there isn’t one near you, maybe you’d like to organize something in your city centre. It doesn’t need to be too big or difficult. It could even be just you and a friend standing with a poster of Sakine and the message Save Sakine; End Stoning Now for example. You could print a few leaflets from our site and distribute them or you can print the open letter calling for 24 July to be International Sakine Day: http://iransolidarity.blogspot.com/2010/07/24-july-2010-international-sakine.html. I once took stones to Trafalgar Square on my own and got a lot of support and responses: http://iransolidarity.blogspot.com/2010/07/on-11-july-place-stones-in-public.html.

If you are able to organize anything, please tell us beforehand so we can post it on the website so that others may join you.

Also, if you can take a picture of what you did, we can then post it on our blog.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks

    Hi guys

I've spent tonight putting this video together.  The end will contain links to
1: A list of places where protests are taking place
2: A link to an A5 sized PDF leaflet for distributing at protests
3: A pre-written letter that people can use to write to their MP

(The links at the end need to be updated)

Would it be okay to host the last 2 items on councilofexmuslims.com?  I have places I can host but I'd like to maintain my anonymity.

There were about 5 or 6 of us handing out leaflets today.  Met a lot of ignorant twats, and quite a lot of nice people who seemed genuinely interested in helping.  It was nice when some people walked past saying "No thank you" and then as the words sunk into their minds they came back and said "Actually, yes please!"

It was nice that Salma Yaqoob turned up too.  I phoned her this morning to check if she was coming, I don't think she'd read my 2 most recent emails naming the date/time because she hadn't realised it was today.  However she left a family wedding and turned up with (I presume) her husband (in his nice wedding suite) and stuck around for about 30 minutes helping us to hand out leaflets - we then posed for a photo for her blog and they left.

Brazil offers asylum to Sakine Mohammadi Ashtiani
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-10832482

    Quote
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has offered to provide refuge to a woman facing execution in Iran. President Lula asked Iran to allow Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani to accept the offer.

Ms Ashtiani's case prompted international outrage when she was initially sentenced to death by stoning. Although that threat was apparently lifted last month, she may still face execution by hanging.

"I call on the supreme leader of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to permit Brazil to grant asylum to this women," Mr Lula said at a campaign rally for his party's presidential candidate.

"If she is causing problems there, we will welcome her here," he added.

Iranian officials have said that judges are currently reconsidering the sentence of Ms Ashtiani, who was sentenced to death by stoning following a conviction for adultery. Despite retracting a confession that she said she had been forced to make under duress, the 43-year-old was found guilty.

Lawyer in Iran stoning case 'missing' and  relatives arrested

    Quote
Mohammad Mostafaei, who is defending the woman, was called in on Saturday for questioning at Tehran's Evin prison. Amnesty says he appears to have gone missing after his release.

The authorities have since detained his wife and brother-in-law, it says.

Mr Mostafaei is a known critic of Iran's judicial system.

He has defended many juvenile offenders, political prisoners and others sentenced to stoning.

Among his most high-profile clients is Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who was sentenced to death by stoning following a conviction for adultery.

Lawyer comes out alive and in Turkey says news.   Iran lawyer in Ashtiani stoning case now in Turkey
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-10870522

    Quote
Mohamed Mostafaei was detained in Turkey because of passport problems but has applied for asylum, the agency said. He disappeared late last month after being summoned for questioning in Tehran.

Amnesty International accused the Iranian authorities of harassing him.
Related stories  A well-known critic of the Iranian judicial system, Mr Mostafaei has been defending Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the mother-of-two facing execution for adultery.

Though the stoning penalty was lifted, she may still be executed by hanging.

Metin Corabatir, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Turkey, said Mr Mostafaei was in custody there and had applied for asylum in Turkey. "The request will now be evaluated in co-operation with Turkish authorities," he said.
    'Thorn in Iran's side'

I think stoning is such a barbaric death that I said that Brazil would receive this woman with open arms”  Speaking to AFP news agency, Mr Corabatir said the UNHCR would look for third countries that would accept him. "That is unfortunately a lengthy process but there are expedited tracks for vulnerable, high-risk people," he added.

Ironic that Lula was trying to befriend him not that long ago.

    Message from Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani

“I am now quiet and sad because a part of my heart is frozen.

The day I was flogged in front of [my son] Sajjad, I was crushed and my dignity and heart were broken.

The day I was given the stoning sentence, it was as if I fell into a deep hole and I lost consciousness.

Many nights, before sleeping, I think to myself how can anybody be prepared to throw stones at me; to aim at my face and hands? Why?

I thank all of you from Tabriz Prison.

Mrs [Mina] Ahadi, tell everyone that I’m afraid of dying. Help me stay alive and hug my children.”

    ___________________________________________

Iran stoning case, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is at imminent risk of execution in Tabriz prison.

Moreover, her well known human rights lawyer, Mohammad Mostafaei, is in prison in Turkey after having fled the country to evade arrest for his advocacy work. His wife remains in prison in Iran – held hostage – until he is remanded into the regime’s custody (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1652). Given Turkey’s close relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mostafaei can face deportation back to Iran even though he has applied for refugee status with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees there.

Campaigners are concerned about the safety of Mostafaei and his wife. We are also extremely concerned for Ashtiani’s life. The regime may be preparing to execute her within the next few days, particularly given that the Tabriz prosecutor has demanded her execution and is awaiting the Tehran high court’s confirmation (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1665).

In her most recent heart-wrenching message, she says:

As a result the public outcry, Brazilian president Lula da Silva has offered Ashtiani asylum there. Ashtiani has accepted the offer (http://iransolidarity.blogspot.com/2010/08/sakineh-ashtiani-accepts-brazilian.html). The regime, however, has rejected it and continues to push for her execution and to disseminate misinformation on her case. It says it intends not to stone her but to execute her for murdering her husband. At the 30 July press conference in London, Mina Ahadi exposed the regime’s misinformation on the case and revealed court documents showing Ashtiani’s sentence of death by stoning for adultery. [In fact, she was acquitted of any murder charges; even those found guilty of murdering her husband have not been executed at the request of the victim’s family.]

At the 30 July press conference, Maryam Namazie also refuted claims made by the embassy of the Islamic regime of Iran in London and the former French ambassador to Iran that stonings in Iran were rare; she referred to a new report published by the International Committee against Executions which has found that over 100 people have been stoned with 25 known cases currently awaiting death by stoning in Iran (http://www.iransolidarity.org.uk/Stoning%20List%20(1989-2010)_edited.doc). Other speakers at the press conference AC Grayling spoke of the contradiction between a medieval government and a progressive population wanting to be free whilst Peter Tatchell stressed the importance of supporting Sakineh and all those languishing on death row.

Given the imminent risk of execution faced by Ashtiani and the insecure status of her lawyer in Turkey we urge the public to act now.

Ashtiani’s stoning and execution orders must be rescinded, she must be immediately released and there must be an end to stoning and executions.

    * See clip of Islamic Republic’s state TV’s misinformation on the 24 July International Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani Day protests we organised and Ashtiani’s case. The regime blurs out her face, uses only her initials and says she was sentenced to execution for brutally murdering her husband. A translation of the court document sentencing her to death by stoning for adultery is available here which refutes their statements on her case: http://iransolidarity.blogspot.com/2010/07/islamic-regime-of-irans-broadcast-on-24.html.

  • Re: Iranian woman faces stoning- organize protests against this atrocity

We need those protest locations/times ASAP so we can get the message out to as many people as possible!  Just a blog URL will do, Maryam can update it as new info comes in.  Hassan, do you think you could persuade her to do that immediately?

PS: I have a video that links to http://tinyurl.com/SakinehProtests (Maryam's previous blog entry) - I've asked her to put a link at the top
    NEW AUGUST 10th PROTESTS

linking to the new blog entry - If you could mention that too it would be good Smiley

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.
