Untidy beds may keep us healthy

Failing to make your bed in the morning may actually help keep you healthy, scientists believe.

Research suggests that while an unmade bed may look scruffy it is also unappealing to house dust mites thought to cause asthma and other allergies.

A Kingston University study discovered the bugs cannot survive in the warm, dry conditions found in an unmade bed.

The average bed could be home to up to 1.5 million house dust mites.

The bugs, which are less than a millimetre long, feed on scales of human skin and produce allergens which are easily inhaled during sleep.

The warm, damp conditions created in an occupied bed are ideal for the creatures, but they are less likely to thrive when moisture is in shorter supply.

    'Small glands'

The scientists developed a computer model to track how changes in the home can reduce numbers of dust mites in beds.

Researcher Dr Stephen Pretlove said: "We know that mites can only survive by taking in water from the atmosphere using small glands on the outside of their body.

"Something as simple as leaving a bed unmade during the day can remove moisture from the sheets and mattress so the mites will dehydrate and eventually die."

Cheesy  See, I always knew this.  I swear this is the only reason I don't see the point in making my bed most days.  No other reason.   whistling2

Who on earth makes their bed these days anyway?  Everybody uses quilts, so there's no point.  I spose the kind of nerd who sets the table for breakfast before they go to bed at night, they're the only ones who make their beds in the morning.

Let alone ironing your sheets and duvet covers.  Cheesy  what nutters.

As long as my sheets and stuff are clean, I genuinely don't care if it looks like it did when I rolled out of it in the morning.  I only prettify it for company, and then it only ends up messier than ever. Grin

Well yes and no. My father insists that whoever washes the dishes after dinner (never him, of course  Roll Eyes ) sets the table for breakfast, so I do it sometimes. :/

I hear that. I'm the same way most of the time. Cool thing about making the bed, however, is it makes your room look 50% cleaner without having to do anything else.

    fuck you

Eh?   Cheesy  Everyone calls them quilts, don't tell me you're one of them posh tarts who calls theirs a duvet.

We don't call just any comforter or duvet quilts here. Quilts are a particular, old-fashioned type of cover-- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quilt#United_States

When one thinks of quilts in the US, you think of your grandma or the Amish.

Lol.  Okay I admit it, I'm Amish.  I'm also your grandmother.

Thanks Berbs for providing me also with a sound, credible reason for never making my bed.

What happened to just calling it a blanket?

Six degrees of seperation.   bunny  I don't care as long as it's warm.

I tend to call it a duvet or a quilt.  Blanket is reserved for fluffy blankets that don't need covers.  I love fluffy blankets.
