  • Smoking?
     OP - June 26, 2010, 10:16 AM

    Who here smokes?

I'm seriously considering quitting forever  Cry

It just goes so well with morning coffee, after a meal and when drinking. And other activities Grin

I have quit over the years but I have been smoking more or less since I was in high-school. I told myself as a compromise I would only smoke when stressed and when going out, but now I'm back to smoking regularly again.

My main issue with is that it's so unhealthy but more specifically the health risks. I have a sore throat now and I'm freaking out, I'll just take that as a reminder for a possible and serious health concern.

Lung cancer, throat cancer, OK any cancer is bad. But that smoking increases the chances of these two?   mysmilie_977

Forget killing yourself, you kill others too with second hand smoke finmad

But yeah, good luck with quitting... I've heard how hard it can be, but maybe if you get into some sort of support system with pals, even online, it might motivate you to stick to moving towards 0 cigs

@coco I can quit cold turkey, I think the reason people come back to it, even after a few years, is simply because they enjoy smoking. It's pretty much a drug I'd say, sans the intoxicating factor except for a short nicotine boost. But then you have the withdrawals so yeah like I said pretty much a drug.

I never smoked before. But I heard that even if you stopped smoking for years, some of the addiction still lingers on forever....hope that's not true :(
nevertheless, it's good to see you decided to fight it once and for all, and we are all here to support you, dude! or at least, I am! Smiley

lol thanks man I hope I didn't come across as a heroin addict Grin

it's not physiological addiction after a few years, actually after a few months is what i read, but psychological i'd say it could still be there, for some at least

But it's bad right? A part of me keeps going

    - Old people smoking cigars
    - Old people smoking pipes
    - Old people smoking cigarettes

    So wtf?

I think it's also a lifestyle issue, but that's dumb. What kind of life would I lead with a damaged voice box :/ I don't want to sound like that  mysmilie_977

Funnily enough I never got addicted to tobacco. I used to smoke it with weed years ago, and that meant a fair bit of tobacco at times, but I could never figure out how people got hooked on it.

BD try substituting it with a little bit of weed (no tobacco) and see if that helps! A puff or two in the morning with coffee, and you are ready to start your day! Afro

Actually, funny enough, I'm not that big on weed. I mean I enjoy it but I don't go looking for it.

It's good to see you wanting to stop, BD. Afro

Personally, I am very adverse to smoking. Someone very close to me smoked for about 10 years and miscarried twice.

    Thanks Ferrero Smiley

    :(

How do you (people in general/non-smokers) not smoke though?

Are smokers a minority in the West?

Here are some demographics on tobacco consumption:

     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prevalence_of_tobacco_consumption

Look at the table for gender x country. It's interesting.

I think the general move in recent years, to it illegal to smoke in enclosed public spaces (in the UK at least) has helped people to not smoke since we are not forced to be surrounded by it.

I was responding to his question, not making an inflammatory statement

He asked why non smokers don't smoke, I was responding that smoking is for idiots, and in that regard, non smokers aren't stupid enough to smoke. Or they haven't discovered it yet.

It also increases your chances of impotency - I would definitely try to quit.

I hope I'm not alarming you but the truth is, non-smokers die too.  Smiley

The only difference is that smokers get to die doing what they wanted to do while they had the chance.

I don't see why anyone would even want to smoke. Everyone on my mums side of the family (except my mum) smokes like fucking chimneys and all you can see is smoke, like a house is on fire or something. More likely to get cancer, stroke, bad skin and your lifespan deecreases, and its a waste of money. Just quit.

i'm an occasional smoker. i like smoking at home while watching tv or reading a good theoretical physics book (i used to do this before i was married a lot) - but i can only do this when the wife is away nowadays, otherwise i'd get killed like a dog in the street.

quitting smoking is really not that difficult - not for me at least, i seem to be able to go on and off smoking whenever i want.

I smoke about 10 a day. I've reached the level of addiction. I HAVE TO smoke after a meal and when I drink.
