debunker apostated once and then went back to Islam. debunker is not an orthodox Muslim. He holds more liberal views on Islam.

does "liberal views on Islam" means he disagrees with stoning women or something like that?

There is only one Islam. Either you are a Muslim or you are not.

It is REALLY ambiguous! And indeed, it does seem as if something is missing... but the trick I use to let this slide is this: maybe the 7th century Arabs had no problem understanding this verse which seems too abstract to me as to think something is missing... after all, it is not unusual for the Arabic language to be too abstract...

No Muslim would say this on the Quran...

Tell that to debunker, since he stated he left Islam and afterwords came back.

He believes in evolution and has admitted there is a problem with the violence in the Quran. Plus he stated he is not an orthodox Muslim.

i think that statement from debunker would make a lot of sense if we agreed that the Qur'an was meant to be limited to 7th century Arabia where Muhammad could explain all the ambiguous bits or important verses that were missing.

I thought you know perfectly well that Islam is to follow the Quran and the Sunna. As evident by the shahada: ashhado Ana la ilaha illa Allah and Mohamed rasoolo Allah.

who says shahada is necessary for someone today to be a Muslim i.e. a submitter? Islam is simply sumbission to peace, so submission to good = submission to God. By submitting to what is good and by doing good for the sake of good, you are serving God and hence you are a Muslim.

this manual is in-built into our intelligence and souls - we do not need scripture. scripture was only sent as a mercy to times and places where it was needed and perhaps where the people were grossly deviating from doing good. i think morality has evolved to the stage where we no longer need scripture to guide us.

I think they are using semantical tricks.
They are using the term "Muslim" in a way that goes against the consensus.

For the consensus, they are not "Muslims".
For their personal definition of "Muslim", they are a Muslim.
Probably, for their personal definition of "Muslim", I am a Muslim as well *shrugs*.

But, isn't this a very weird mind trick?
    Why do such thing?
Are they somehow scared of dropping the "Muslim" label because it's part of their culture, so they have to apply intense semantical gymnastics to keep such a label on themselves? :S

perhaps, but i'm not sure anyone today really knows what that is/what it was.

I think the quran is clear, and it is a compilation of instructions to his followers during various different times.  I think the problem is that people are not prepared some of the more contentious things (like 4:34) but dont want to leave the religion either.

So they make their own versions up and are never able to agree, always claiming each other are wrong and not following true Islam, because they are not prepared to follow the others version.
