Looking into it. Safari doesn't show the avatars, and it doesn't give an error. :/

Honestly, I would have left it all alone and just told them to change image host for avatars. It was only giving problems with avs hosted on imgur. Now we have a whole this bug leads to that bug cycle to deal with.

Ok I'm seeing incorrect resizing on some avatars now. Q-Man's latest is one example. Instead of being resized with the correct proportions it is being distorted to 1:1.2 (which is 125x150 proportions instead of the original ratio). Debunker's av is showing the same problem.

I think the changes to code were not exactly an improvement in practical terms.

I think some fundamentals are trying to this site down starting with the avatars....

Somehow, this fails to attach the event:

    document.addEventListener ?
      document.addEventListener('load', smf_avatarResize, false) :
      $(smf_avatarResize);

When document.addEventListener is true (in every browser but IE).

Try always using the jQuery way unconditionally?

I noticed that some members have avatars which link to big-ass images, like DreamWeaver's current one: http://i.imgur.com/pGDCM.jpg
Surely this is a complete waste of bandwidth.

    Always been like that.

The only way around it would be to use the forum server to fetch the remote images and store them locally, but that means using more disk space and bandwidth on the forum server, which means more costs to run coem forums.

But worry not: the image is only fetched once by your browser, and then it stays cached indefinitely.
All later requests will be replied with "image has not changed" which uses very little bandwidth (and does not depend on image size).

Plus there's the CPU time taken resizing these big images to the avatar-sized image.

Unless you are on a ZX Spectrum, that's negligible ;P

Tried it. Didn't work in Safari... But when I execute the function manually (in Safari) it just works. wtf...

Did it work in Safari before, when it was directly in index.php instead of script.js?

I  thought it was working perfectly before the messing around started, except for avs that were hosted on imgur and had the bodgey url's (which are easy to correct, apparently). SMF do test this shit before releasing it, y'know.

Cheesy Reminds me of its predecessor, the ZX81.  The adventure games went like this:

    Quote
Do you want to turn the handle Y/N? (NB: black & white screen with no graphics)
    Y
You turn the handle and the road goes in 2 directions, do you want to go East or West?
    E
Not Recgnised, please retype using the words 'East' or 'West'

But still people were hooked 015

How will reverting this shit improve anything? People started to complain for a reason in the beginning. I tried to fix it, but it's still broken in some cases.

Yes but the only ones that were giving problems were the avs hosted on imgur, and wasn't that due to the url's having a . in them? 99% of avs were fine.

Nevermind - it was a clearing cache issue in case any future user gets the same issue

Will have to look back. Didn't remember that bit. I thought that happened after changes.

Anyway I have a suggestion if this is being a PITA. IF you want to keep playing with it that's up to you. If you don't I'll just see if it happens on the latest build of 2.0. If it does, I just put it on Mantis and let them sort it. We can live without the occasional avatar until we upgrade.

It turns out it wasnt a cache issue, as its happening again

Another problem in IE is that the posts are not properly separated, the last lines of one post (the sigs) are superimposed on the first lines of the next post.

I dont get that with IE, might be something to do with your display settings - which version of IE are you using?

Yeah, resizing was not working in IE8 for me with the original code.
