    LOl @ Germany.

Gonna lose to Uruguay in play-offs too.

Hmm ... possibly, depends on who cares more about this game, possibly Uruguay cares more.

I have done with this World Cup, but I'd obviously rather Holland win against Spain, just so they get a kick in the nuts for outing Germany.

I dunno why everyone's rootin' for Spain to win. Come to think of it, that's probably part of the reason why I want them to lose.

That and, I had 60 quid riding on Germany.

i think the word you are looking for is dutch iblis  Smiley

And, Spain will win it. There is something mesmerising about the technical perfection of their midfield - even if they don't score 4 goals in the final and end up being the lowest scoring world cup winners ever. Spain have made the game beautiful again.

I'm not sure if this is true but I've heard that the dutch get very angry if you refer to their country as Holland. Reason being that Holland just happens to be a major province of the country and not the country itself. Kind of like repeatedly referring to the US as Texas.

Germans refer to the Dutch as Niederlandisch and they refer to themselves as Deutsch.

The third/forth place match should be scapped.  If I got knocked out of the semi-final and missed out on playing in the World Cup Final, then I wouldn't be able to motivate myself to play one more game to determine if I finish third or forth.  Who gives a crap anyway?

    Netherlands FTW btw...  dance

2nd 3rd and 4th place are still prestigious positions to come in the World Cup though. A bit unfair really because I bet Portgugal could have beaten all the teams Spain have beaten so far. It's just that Spain and Portugal happened to face each other in last 16 and only one of those two great teams could advance. Otherwise I'd say (assuming Spain will come 1st) that Portugal deserved to come 2nd.

Or say if Germany could have beaten Holland but they lost to Spain who will also beat Holland... then surely Germany deserve to come 2nd... but no, it was either 1st or 3rd for them because of the knock-out style of the tournament.

Uruguay only had to beat South Korea and Ghana in the knockout stages in order to become semi-finalists whereas Germany had to beat England and Argentina. Yet both Uruguay and Germany have technically gotten as far in the tournament as each other.

I could go on forever. It's not really fair but I guess knock out style tournaments count towards alot of excitement.

    Thought of some lame puns:

    1) England fan: HAHA GERMNY LOST HAHAHAHA!
German fan: Genau, but at least vee vere not Müllered!!

(Note: Mullered: English slang for "beaten-up real bad" and Müller who scored 2 goals against England)

    2) Come on Klose ... you are so close!!

(In reference to: BBC Sport: striker Miroslav Klose, as he closes in on the all-time World Cup finals scoring record.)

It will be a shame if Klose does become the leading goalscorer in World Cup history, but without a single World Cup winners' medal throughout his career.

He's 32 this year I believe and he'll be 36 in 2014 so I pretty much doubt he will have another shot at the greatest stage. :(

Ye, I think this was his last world cup. A great goal scorer he is though.

Epic match. I think Uruguay put more effort in than the Germans. The Germans seemed a little bit lazy. But they deserved their place as 3rd in this tournament. They've been a great sport and entertaining to watch.

That's a bit of a shame that Klose was a substitute ... but nice one Germany ... though wasn't that first goal off-side? Either way, I hope both teams keep form for the next world cup. The bar is so high now. Headers have become pretty deadly now and one of the few ways to penetrate the high standards of defence and goalkeeping in the final stages (I might be completely wrong on this but that's how I'm seeing it).

though wasn't that first goal off-side?

Nope. Muller wasn't offside. Another player was.
  • Re: The Official World Cup Thread

So since the winger was offside, should the whistle have been blown for the German team being offside?
  • Re: The Official World Cup Thread

No because the winger was not involved in that strike.
  • Re: The Official World Cup Thread

I see what you are saying but is that mentioned in the official rules? As I understand the official rules:

    - A player is in an offside position if he is in his opponents' half of the field (pitch) and is closer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and all but zero or one of his opponents.

    - Although the term goal line is often taken to mean only that part of the line between the goalposts, in fact it refers to the complete line at either end of the pitch, from one corner flag to the other.

    What do you think?
  • Re: The Official World Cup Thread

It's not an offence to be in an offside position. It's an offence to involve yourself in play, play a part in distracting an opponent or use your position to your advantage whilst being in an offside position.
