I can never watch bollywood movies... the high pitched singing makes me want to cover my ears I've heard it's gotten better these days, but I can't confirm through first hand experience. Old bollywood movies are hilarious I prefer non-mainstream indian films... the ones that actually deal with profound issues rather than some heroine in a mini skirt traipsing down the alps with her gyrating lover.

I once saw an Indian movie that seemed to be basically about a couple trying to get rid of a guy. They put him in the freezer, then he got out. They threw him off a mountain, then he walked back up. Then I turned the channel.

That's basically all Bollywood movies.

sorry to say but all the 'all cultures have pluses and minuses' crap doesn't cut it for me.
i'd much prefer a culture than celebrates individuality , enterprise and freedom of speech and expression (the US) than a culture which is collective oriented, honour oriented and tells people to bite their lips on just about everything (most of asia).

Scandanavian countries are probably a lot better than the US in terms of free speech and individuality. So I have heard. I like northern europe in general coz they have more atheists

The only freedom the US has more than most developed countries is the freedom to exploit.

@abood : i don't talk to people who have their head in the clouds with utopian ideals. they're setting the bar too high with fantasy social systems.

They do a better job at keeping religion and the state separate. No issues on gay rights and marriage either.

According to a press freedom survey, the Scandinavian countries, including Finland and Iceland, have the press with most freedom in the world. Don't know if that automatically qualifies as 'a lot better', but it sure is an interesting indication. http://www.worldaudit.org/presstable.html

i read through that and scandinavia is certainly a little better on the press front than the US. my original point shows through clearly, hardly any countries in the 'free' bucket in asia.

i said 'hardly' any countries. japan, south korea and israel are the only ones marked free as far as i could see though india's score is pretty close too.
out of these japan and south korea have a clear US influence.

It's all fine and dandy when you use bourgeois standards to measure freedom of expression, but what about the freedom of expression of the proletariat?
