  • On "A Universe from Nothing" by Lawrence Krauss - is theism scientific?

    This is my first post.

I finished reading Lawrence Krauss' " A Universe from Nothing" (a second time) on Friday. I have also seen his debate with Hamza Tzortzis. I noticed a CEMB forum member transcribed the debate for which I am appreciative.

Krauss provides a compelling argument that the universe was not created by a divine supreme being. I have not seen any scientific rebuttal to his book except a critical book review by David Albert in the New York Times. It appears Albert is criticising Krauss for over-simplifying the sociology of religious belief (a bit like Terry Eagleton does for Richard Dawkins), however it is unclear to me whether Albert himself actually believes in god.

I would be interested to learn from any CEMB users whether there has been a scientific critique of Krauss' conclusions in the book. Please also - should anyone know - state works of scientists who believe in god as *a result of scientific thinking* and not merely through faith.

I am inferring from this that you don't consider dawahman a scientist.

As for scientists who think the cosmos gives evidence for God, you can check out Paul Davies or Luke Barnes. I'd be surprised if they haven't taken a shot at Krauss's claims.

"I moreover believe that any religion that has anything in it that shocks the mind of a child, cannot be a true system."

There may be some who take on a deistic or pantheistic view as a result of their work, I imagine there are some, but I've never come across anyone who entered the sciences and thought "Wow this is just like what *insert religious text* says!" without being religious themselves.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
