  • New Course--Introduction to the Quran
     OP - October 12, 2015, 06:11 PM

    Greetings CEMB'ers,

I do apologize for my prolonged absence, life has gotten in the way of my formerly relentless pursuit of The Truth (TM) in regards to the origins of the Islamic religion.

EdX, the people behind the MOOC, are offering a free online course called "Introduction to the Quran" taught by none other than Gabriel Said Reynolds, the current reining champ of moderate scholarly revionism vis-a-vis Islamic origins. I had meant to start this thread last week but once again, life intervened. In any event here is a link to the course, I do not believe that it's too late to sign up at this point:

This thread will be for discussing class topics and perhaps all threads that pop up on the in-class forum.

Gabriel Said Reynolds tweeted about it this morning so I take it it's still possible to sign up.

Well, I've not bothered with EdX before, so this is now to be my first course. It'll be interesting, as my previous Islamic studies-type courses were mainly restricted to my first year of a degree in Arabic (I was more intrigued by what was then more recent political history).

By my reckoning, this first year was twenty years ago. Crumbs.

Via this course, I've come to Fazlur Rahman (whom I'd heard of but never read anything by) and S. Parvez Manzoor, whom I'd never heard of but find strangely compulsive reading. And all this while being a week behind.

So - what's everyone else's impression of this so far?

I know it´s not what you asked, but I really wish I had the time to take this. I am very interested to read what anyone wants to share about it.
