    What to do if your p-value is just over the arbitrary threshold for ‘significance’ of p=0.05?

    You don’t need to play the significance testing game – there are better methods, like quoting the effect size with a confidence interval – but if you do, the rules are simple: the result is either significant or it isn’t.

    So if your p-value remains stubbornly higher than 0.05, you should call it ‘non-significant’ and write it up as such. The problem for many authors is that this just isn’t the answer they were looking for: publishing so-called ‘negative results’ is harder than ‘positive results’.

    The solution is to apply the time-honoured tactic of circumlocution to disguise the non-significant result as something more interesting. The following list is culled from peer-reviewed journal articles in which (a) the authors set themselves the threshold of 0.05 for significance, (b) failed to achieve that threshold value for p and (c) described it in such a way as to make it seem more interesting.

    As well as being statistically flawed (results are either significant or not and can’t be qualified), the wording is linguistically interesting, often describing an aspect of the result that just doesn’t exist. For example, “a trend towards significance” expresses non-significance as some sort of motion towards significance, which it isn’t: there is no ‘trend’, in any direction, and nowhere for the trend to be ‘towards’.

    My research design professor last year was super into statistics, and biologists' over reliance on the p value at the expense of any other meaningful statistics, like those measuring effect size. I think his favorite line was something along the lines of "50% of studies aren't even accurate because they aren't held to the right statistical standards", which honestly puts a bit of doubt into a lot of the biology that's done these days. Guess you'd just have to pick over the numbers with a fine toothed comb, and you could screw over a lot of researchers in the field. Grin

    Your professors analysis is pretty solid.

    The problem is that the p-value is treated as a sort of magical measure of information. The p-value isn't supposed to be the measure of whether or not a hypothesis is true (but that's exactly how it's treated).

    "Omg p <α, now we can stop thinking!"

    The P-value should be the probability of the data given the null hypothesis (frequentist analysis). More often than not, it's interpreted as the probability of the hypothesis given the data.

    Gah, maths!! lol. I hated them in uni...in fact if I knew some statistics had to be done, I'd volunteer early to do other tasks so when statistics time came around, everyone would be like "oh you did all the other stuff, I'll do this".  Tongue

    Enjoying this thread. I've been pretty amazed at some of the data bio-type people will try to find a correlation in. I've seen some local biologists present a 'relationship' between two parameters in a scatter plot that looked for all the world like they'd drawn a straight line through a swarm of bees.
