    My point was to note that things can change extremely rapidly!  I think Islam could collapse and melt away in a similar fashion.

    :-) I think it is melting away from underneath, like the Antarctic ice. 

    It was on its way out in the fifties and sixties, but really oil has given it a last splurge, with loads of help from the CIA getting rid of various democratically elected governments.

    It is going to be a while but I cannot seeing it lasting more than a few decades.  Things will be messy though.  The terrorism is really the death throes.

    It is not an economy or a nation state. Islam has already survived the collapse of many great empires. You will need a lot more literacy and internet access before you could see a collapse. Though you may find that educated Muslims will gradually stop taking it so seriously. "Political Islam" is obviously turning out to be a failure. And hopefully the next generation of Muslims growing up now will reject it.

    Islam is becoming more and more tied to racial/ethnic/social identity. I don't see it easily collapsing as long as it serves as a counterpoint to "the West" in such a way.

    I remember reading an old post by Ali Sina, founder of what was then a large website to convince people to leave Islam. He predicted that within 10 years Islam will collapse. Its been more than 10 years he made that prediction if I remember correctly.

    Isn't it all about where we get authority and laws and morality, working it out together or being told by a god or powerful person?

    So Islam and religions are on their way out, simply because more and more people are conscious that they can try and work thing out.
