  • Hello from down-under
     OP - March 03, 2015, 08:49 AM

    Hi forumites
I'm not an ex-muslim - I was brought up in the UK without religion and my parents allowed me to make up my own mind (I'm an atheist - being a scientist helps with that ;-). I stumbled across this site when surfing the web trying to understand what made young teens, the same age as my daughters head off to Syria to join ISIS.

I then watched Imtiaz Sham's videos on the home page (excellent BTW) and it made me realise what a tough gig leaving Islam is for some of you, and that conservative Islam is making life a misery for free-thinkers in their own communities in the UK & Australia. I also saw the Faith to faithless videos - I was very moved by the stories and amazed at the level of religious dogma and supression of questioning that the people in the videos described. The really sad thing is the conflict that arises between people leaving Islam and their families, even when the relationships had been very close.

Anyway I think that those that are going public are being very brave for speaking up and I really hope your efforts make life easier for those who are wrestling with these issues whilst 'in the closet'. It is a bit difficult for a white kaffir like me to find a way to oppose militant islam when such efforts tend to be hijacked by the EDL etc and make muslim communities feel even more under siege, however activities like CEMB, this Forum and Faith to Faithless I certainly can support (and if anyone knows how I can make a donation to Faith to Faithless please let me know).

    Best wishes to all here.

    Welcome. parrot What's your field?

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Pfft, I was a physicist on CEMB before it was all the rage.

(I'm not actually a physicist of course, only one in training)
