    Hello my friends,

I am not an ex-Muslim, but I am an ex-Christian.  Gay, atheist, and I am also from the United States.  So why did I join this forum?

I had recently been exploring religion again (death in the family, questioning, all of that fun stuff), and part of that involved listening to freethinker podcasts, including a number of excellent episodes of the Godless Spellchecker.  The host featured some guests from the Ex-Muslims of North America, and their testimony was powerful stuff.  Unfortunately so much criticism of Islam in the United States and Europe is wrapped in right wing hysteria, racism and real anti-Muslim bias (as opposed to "Islamophobia") that it is difficult to discuss the issue rationally.

So why would I care? I also live in a state that has a large Muslim population.  My first boyfriend was a Muslim (or rather, from a Muslim background), my sister is in the midst of dating/breaking up with a Muslim, I work with plenty of Muslims, and like any reasonably observant American I can see that Islam is part of our national discourse, and has been at least since the 9/11 attacks took place when I started college.

So I am here to learn, offer support and chat and debate with a much maligned, but, in my opinion, vitally important community.  You. :-)

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
