In the West, freedom of religion – including the freedom to leave a religion – is a foundational principle and is inscribed in Article 18 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, apostasy – despite the efforts of moderate Muslims – remains a stigma within Western Muslim communities.

I have a feeling that Simon's book will become the go to resource for any non muslims wanting to learn about the exmuslim experience.

In my opinion a life without curiosity is not a life worth living

Bookmarked your article before I went to bed. I've just read it over morning coffee. I'm glad I did.

Good to see you talking about how social/tribal elements compound the problem. An awful Catch-22.

    A criminologist, eh?

Thanks everyone for these kind comments!
I hope the book becomes a resource for ex-Muslims, too – and maybe even their families (although that might be pushing it, given how much you guys swear in it…)
I’m not really a criminologist, but I am interested in transgression and deviance. That’s where you guys come in, right? Master deviators, pushing the boundaries!

Thanks Simon for the awesome work! Much needed work here to help people like those here and those who haven't found here yet and similar places online (reddit/exmuslims)!

    Master deviators,

    Definitely.

    pushing the boundaries!

That would people like Maajid Nawaz, Irshad Manji, a bunch of other liberal reformers and those gay Imams.

I think Ex-Muslims are more onto utterly and irrevocably obliterating said boundaries grin12
