I think I understand why some complain about leftists and liberals being allies with Islamists.Even if you're trying get them to see the scope of the problem, Im not sure it matters how many times you try to say that you're not against muslims or all muslims. Criticizing Islam or Sharia, is not what some leftist or liberals want.

Why not just ask and engage in a discussion about it with someone who expresses those kind of views?

Because it's gotten to the point they can't differentiate. They'll slag off christianity until the sun comes up, talk about the evils of teaching people they're born in sin, call telling children about hell child abuse, and it's okay because christianity is just a religion, and mostly practised by white people. Unless they aren't white christians, in which case might have to reconsider saying anything bad about it.

Islam though, islam is mostly non white people, and thus not just a religion. So even if you don't have a racist bone in your body it's still racist because it's non whites who believe in it. It's okay to talk bad about islam to white muslims though, that's not racist.

There are a few factors behind this . In some cases it's well meaning muddled thinking . I try and point out to this type that the people who really suffer in communities where fundamentalist interpretations hold sway are actually muslims , especially women.
There are also many people who have cynical political motives - Respect supporters , MPs in marginal seat with large muslim populations etc.
But I'm afraid a lot of the time it's sheer cowardice that stops people commenting on certain issues

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I'm from a background where people make fun of those who have a darker skin tone. I don't know if it is self-racism , but it can be classified as such.

It's very hypocritical for neo-cons to condemn portions of the left for aligning with the islamic far-right. In the 80's when the left were combating the Islamic Far-Right in Afghanistan Neo-Cons themselves aligned with and greatly supported the Islamic far-right !

Orthodox Lefties like me can talk about the problems with contemporary neo-lefties straying away from normative orthodox left principles of criticising theology and being anti-theocracy without their being any double standard.

The neocons have had more disastrous effects than leftist and liberals(non neocons) on the world stage. But I think some leftist and liberals need to understand that they're not helping muslims by the way they've been acting.
