More white people believe in ghosts than in racial discrimination

    Quote
This month, following the police shooting of Michael Brown and then the police-led violence against demonstrations calling for justice, one would think that any skepticism regarding the existence of racial discrimination in the U.S. would be eradicated.

And although it’s finally the topic of mainstream discussion, according to a Pew/MSNBC poll, it turns out more white people believe in ghosts than in “discrimination against blacks.”

    (Clicky for piccy!)

Not only do 17% of the people polled believe in ghosts, but they also think they’ve “interacted” with them. So, racial discrimination based on hundreds of years of well-documented systematic oppression? Nah. High-fiving supernatural beings, of which there exists absolutely no evidence? Yep!

Does the absence of T-Rex ghosts prove that the creationists were right? Moving swiftly on..

Animals don't have souls, so presumably that prevents them doing ghosts.

Incidentally I was just thinking that such a survey in Australia would probably give similar results.

Re the OP, I know that's true in my immediate family alone. And don't get me started on the entire extended family.  015

I got into a bit of a tense situation over the weekend because of this article. I mentioned it when my sister and her fiance and I were all visiting my parents' house for the day, and the soon-to-be brother-in-law emphatically insisted that both ghosts and racial discrimination are real. I listened to him talk about how a friend of his in high school had a haunted house where things were always being moved around and going missing and how they kept hearing weird sounds and it was indisputably a ghost.

Not wanting to get into it, I said, "Well, don't tell (husband) that, I've been trying to get him to stop believing in jinn for 2 years."

But then the guy bristled and said, "They're not jinn, that's stupid. They're ghosts."

I probably should have shut up, but I said, "Ghost, jinn, whatever's turning the vacuum on at night and making you lose your keys," and he insisted again that they're ghosts. And I asked, "How do you know? Maybe the thing in your friend's house was named Abdullah." And then he takes his iphone out of his pocket and stares at it and the conversation is over.

If anything, I'd have thought the racial discrimination part would have been the part to rub someone the wrong way. But no, I offended someone with the ghost part. Whoops.

    'Murika.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

If it's any consolation my extended family is just as ignorant and messed up as yours.   yes

I always think this will end up blowing in my face if I ever get a serious girlfriend and it goes to the " meet the family stage"

There should be an article addressing that topic.

Yeah, yeah, we'll talk when they do a documentary on you. Cheesy

Just the other day, my husband said, "I bet when your father first went back to Kentucky with your mom to see where she lived he thought, 'Oh, God, what did I get into...'" If my dad can survive it, your future girlfriends should be able to  roll with the punches, too.  yes
