    That article you posted is about Saudis, not US Imperialism. If the USA had not allied with Saudi Arabia, how do you know that what would have come to power there would not have been even more extremist than the Saudis?

    I am not an expert on Saudi society, but I am not aware that there was any grass roots popular support for a more liberal, pro-democracy government in Saudi Arabia back in the era when the USA started their alliance. But maybe you know more about this than me....

    Just to get an understanding of the level of support for all these conspiracy theories among Muslims in various parts of the world. I'd actually be very interested in what the general feeling is on ISIL in your neck of the woods Cato.

    Muslims are very good at having these conspiracy theories. Considering many of them think 911 was perpetrated by the US government and the Jews, and that the Rigby killing was a government conspiracy against Muslims, you will likely find many Muslims with the view that IS is supported by Western powers.

    Then again, I think many Muslims simply say they believe this theories, because it is a good way to deflect blame and it is socially acceptable in their circles, whether they really believe these things is another matter in my opinion. I mean to say, that to Muslims, deflecting blame with these theories is considered perhaps 'cool' and has a lot to do with in-group identification.

    I have seen non-Muslims saying that IS clearly is a British operation because the alleged beheader of James Foley had a thick British accent wacko

    But then I do have got a few wacko Facebook friends through my online debating during the latest culling of Gaza.

    Don't really talk to any Muslims about this sort of thing. Would rather study/play ping pong with them. Maybe my Dad could have some opinions about it.

    I know Muslims in real life who think like this. I've also heard some speculate that the ISIL fighters have had some kind of black magic performed on them.

    I haven't talk to many muslims yet to get a feel for this one, i.e conspiracy or otherwise. That said I've heard plenty say the Juice were behind 911 and the mess that is Syria(if they can turn muslim against muslim then they can go about their wicked mischeif untwarted) or USA gov-Boston bombing or UK gov -Rigby murder etc so I won't be surprised if this turns out to be the case too.

    Having spent the majority of my summer in Lebanon, my family believe that it is an American movement.

    However, they also believe that this is one of the last big signs that the world is coming to an end (I believe it's about the Syria civil war and then a 3rd party coming in and resolving the conflict)

    Now, I have to theories on this:

    1 - a self fulfilling prophecy
    2 - the Americans know about this prophecy and are carrying it out to make the middle east run into anarchy.

    About the second point, Napoleon clearly mocked the Egyptians when he resided there for a while (I haven't done much research) but he formed laws that contributed to society. This action has been praised by many a Muslim that I know - leading them to telling me that he himself converted to Islam.
