    I don't think that this style of "teaching" places emphasis on explanations. The regurgitation "repeat after me" method can be effective at dampening intellectual inquiry.

    If you have a strict teacher or the misfortune of going to a madrasa then the "teaching" is a pretty good example of operant conditioning.

    From my experience of being exposed to the Qur'an for the first time (thankfully I never went to one of those schools) I learnt fuck all except how to read and pronounce random letters which I didn't understand.

    At that stage I couldn't really question what I didn't comprehend because "understanding"" wasn't a property that was ascribed to the Islamic education.
