  • Why did lua cross the road?
     Reply #30 - April 28, 2014, 10:37 AM

    There's a reason why Muslims who really go into their religion rarely have any non-Muslims friends. Islam promotes a Muslims separatist och supremacist ideology, every time Muslim culture merged into the culture of the conquered and adopted new customs and practices that were deemed "un-Islamic", there was always a group of purist to come down on them. Al Andalus is a perfect example how, supposedly, Muslim, Christian and Jewish culture integrated with each other and created this "tolerant" society. Well, the purist movement that came from North Africa had something to say about that...

    al Andalus is so overhyped, it really is. And even the way it is hyped is not as an example of genuine tolerance and pluralism, its celebrated as a Pax Islamica, ie: the rule of Islam 'allowed' tolerance and pluralism, so we don't really need secular liberal democracy do we? Because Islam with its benign rule produced 'the greatest ever ever ever ever' tolerance in al Andalus.

    Its just hyped up as dawah propaganda without any care for historical accuracy or understanding of true pluralism and tolerance

    This myth in particular has been a thorn in my side with my husband. I cannot seem to get him to accept that it wasn't as wonderful as he thought it was. He acts so starry-eyed and nostalgic, you'd think he really had lived there and found it to be a utopia.

    It is the bottom line whenever I've tried to say that sharia is incompatible with the world and a poor system. He always tries to say, "How do you explain al-Andalus, then?" It was taught as this beautiful example in his schools and in his "history" books, and nothing I say or show him seems to be sufficient to take them on.

    Nope. Used some statistical analysis with a sample size of one. Extremely significant.

    I was wondering what seminar this was and why I would have even mentioned it on here, but then I remembered it was probably the one I was going to last year when I got in a tiny car crash and then promptly told everyone I knew about it and apparently also the internet. Grin I nearly forgot about that.

    No worries, I'm not sober right now.

    Two-pronged excuse:

    1. I suck at drawing
    2. You ruined the mystery, I've seen your face up and down this forum now!

    2. You now have a reference frame

    Kodanshi, how goes your math hobbying?

    Well-ish! At the moment I'm trying to wrap my head around stuff I have vague memories of from school - like the quadratic formula, which I'm sure goes to the tune of 'Pop Goes the Weasel'.
  • Why did lua cross the road?
     Reply #59 - February 28, 2015, 01:06 AM

    The quadratic formula is neat! The (informal) proof is very neat also. If you remember back to completing the square...

    Let ax^2 + bx + c = 0 be a binomial function where a,b,c are all real numbers. Then
    x^2 + (b/a)x + c/a = 0
    -> [x + b/(2a)]^2 - [b/(2a)]^2 + c/a = 0
    -> [x + b/(2a)]^2 = [b/(2a)]^2 - c/a
    -> [x + b/(2a)]^2 = b^2 / (4a^2) - 4ac / (4a^2)
    -> [x + b/(2a)]^2 = (b^2 - 4ac) / (2a)^2
    -> x + b/(2a) = +/-sqrt[(b^2 - 4ac) / (2a)^2]
    -> x = - b/(2a) +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac) / 2a
    -> x = [- b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)] / 2a

    Tadaaaa!
