    Gas balloons explode burning more than 40 people in Lahore says news

    LAHORE: Gas balloons released during Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif's inauguration of an overhead bridge near Walton Road exploded after landing in the area near Kamaha road on Sunday, resulting in burn injuries to at least 42 people nearby,

    Area residents shifted the injured to nearby hospitals on a self-help basis where they were provided medical treatment. Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and sought a report from the district administration.

    Sharif demanded answers regarding the nature and kind of gas filled in the balloons and warned of firm action against those held responsible.

    A police probe into the incident went underway.

    Look at these idiots.. what gas? what Police enquiry? Arrest the rascals.   they filled   hydrogen gas with some oxygen in it you fool.. That is the  news from Land of Pure..

    I'll admit I'm used to balloons that are filled with either hydrogen or oxygen. Does something happen if you combine the two?

    I don't think that was hydrogen and oxygen. There was fire at one point.

    @Quod,
    Although I haven't seen the video:

    - Hydrogen explodes in the presence of a spark or something of that nature but this can't happen if there is no oxygen.
    - H20 is a different combination to Hydrogen and Oxygen in a gaseous state.

    Ah. Even very very drunk that makes sense. Though in a way I feel yeez lied to me. What he said amounted to hydrogen being mixed with oxygen as though mixing yellow and blue to make green, not that if you put either yellow or blue to air you would get green.

    It is a highly exothermic reaction causing a release of a considerable amount of energy which causes the surrounding air to expand suddenly. This results into a sharp explosion. It's why they abandoned hydrogen blimps in favour of helium which is inert. Also one of the main problems in hydrogen fuel cells.

    Isn't that why explosives can also be used to quell oil rig fires?
    As far as I know (I've only studied chem at a high school level), the explosives deplete the oxygen or something?

    2nd., my damn laptop that i use for visiting forums is not connecting to internet although other PCs gets connected through same wireless as well as same router  broad band wired..
