^ I don't even believe our votes are counted, perhaps only for local council seats, i've only ever voted once and never again, the big guys figure it all out amongst themselves years in advance, voting day is just theatre.  Direct democracy is just a dream but i agree with musivore it is a scary thought that we dumbed down plebonians with zero education in politics could ever make important decisions   : )

Its a pretty simple question, in my opinion.

How could any sane person walk into a polling station, look at a ballot paper which asks "should your country be an independent nation?"  and tick the box marked no.

Nobody in their right minds would do that.  Anything else is just bribery or scare tactics.

You make perfect sense Cheetah. Yet I am selfishly drawn to us sticking together, albeit with greater devolution for all, something which Scotland would continue to lead the way with given a No vote. Other selfish reasons that I have for us to stay together are that we seem stronger and more  influential together, we have a better chance of having Labour govts if together, and we also have a better chance of staying in Europe if we are together. To add to this, a divorce will be messy and will lead to a drawn out period of uncertainty, leading to medium-term turmoil and inevitable investor flight, which the UK as a whole seems ill able to afford, given other headwinds we are facing.

But I am willing to be more sympathetic to a Yes vote if my concerns were allayed regarding the following:
    - The currency union plan seems hazy at best, and nuts at worst. It is only likely to be agreed by the BofE with the imposition of fiscal and monetary constraints on Scotland. In effect, this will preserve the status quo, so how can that be considered independence? As far as I can tell, Scotland has no other means of bank rolling against currency runs and spikes in debt interest that small, heavily indebted countries like Scotland face in today's climate.
    - Uncertainty of an independent Scotland being allowed into the EU, especially given the obstacles that Spain will present. And it seems ironic that the fear of being taken out Europe is one of the main arguments that Yes are pushing?

And I suppose that's the end of Scottish independence in your head, no matter what currency you're promised.  If you really wanted an independent country you'd use shirt buttons if you had to.

Sounds risky to me. Could be chaos for a long time. But I'm not Scottish, and I share none of your (Northern Irish?) sympathies for the Scots plight. They just could have thought about this aspect of things better? It is important?

Oh, I thought from your post above, where you listed your concerns about currency and the EU that you were Scottish.

    My mistake.

There's some interesting pics, including monks going to vote and a lad playing a bagpipe with fire.

Anyway, looks like the Scots are voting no. Alex Salmond isn't looking happy.

And so, the battle lost, Alex Salmond returns to the highlands and lays down in the sacred place. As he returns to slumber, hidden away in the dark with Mel Gibson and dancing haggis filling his dreams, he reflects. According to legend, centuries from now, when Scotland needs him most, Alex Salmond will return. Perhaps then, the people will finally be ready.

I have to say I am surprised and think it was the scare tactics.

    Or the realism.

I read a great article by a Scottish writer who joined the Yes campaign half way through and was told immediately to ask no questions and go along with it because the cause was just and all would be perfect in the perfect future (remind you of anything?).

But he saw any number of different groups with different, and wholly incompatible, views of this perfect future, and resented not being allowed to ask questions. So he left.

(Can't remember his name, so no link. Sorry.)

Having said that, I'm sad they didn't vote yes. My first instinct is always to destroy and recreate. Happily I confine this urge to digging up lousy gardens and rebuilding lousy buildings rather than lopping people's heads off with my machete.
