Check out Sir Richard Francis Burton, he was a geographer, translator, linguist, spy who spoke over 20 languages. He went to Mecca and performed the hajj against the odds that he might be found out and put to death since non-muslims were not allowed in Mecca. He even had a circumcision to be on the safe side.

I shall look into him thanks Smiley

Christopher Hitches' work on Kissinger and Mother Theresa is an eye opener and probably his best work. I thought of him contradicting himself when it came to politics, he somehow ended up being an advocate for military strikes against Iraq,Iran,Pakistan and so on and so forth. He was also quite militant in his approach to religion and that in my view is as bad as religious fundamentalism. Besides that he wrote an article on why men are funnier than women and his primary argument was because men an innate drive to make women laugh so they can get into their pants, to me that reeked of misogyny. Besides he had his head so much up his arse that the only thing he could see was himself and to prove by hook or by crook that he was right and he came up with some atrocious reasons to justify his political allegiances with the war on terror campaign.

Orwell's novels are a good read and explains why he was disillusioned by the Imperialistic agenda back in those days but you can get a better insight by reading his essays which range from how to make a good cup of tea to the difference between nationalism and patriotism.

On Hitchens, what he went through between the first Iraq-war and the second, was more of a transition than a contradiction. He changed a lot from his earlier self, in the last 15 years of his life.
As for the misogyny, I can't see why it is completely unthinkable that men have developed a superior ability to make one laugh, as a result of this being (and still is, or might be) a quality valued highly by most women. If a respected evolutionary biologist stepped forward and claimed this, would it still be misogynistic? Not saying it is true though, but it is not unthinkable.
Nor is it misogynistic in my view. Men are generally funnier than women. That is not to say that there aren't many women who are a whole lot more funnier than many men, but I guess you got the point.

There are quite a few things I would criticize Hitchens for, but his reasons for supporting the terror-campaign, is as good as any. Not willing to dive into that pool right now, but Saddam Hussein just had to go down. For how much longer could the world really stand by and watch a grotesque totalitarian dictatorship carry on, for another decade, after unmentionable atrocities towards the Kurds, Iranis, Kuwaitis and Iraqis had been ignored?

As for Orwell, I'm reading as much of him as I can, lately. I'll give a go for his essays as well!:)

Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it.

Christopher Hitchens is as over rated as anal sex. He believed Pakistan ran the foreign policy of USA, how fucking daft can you get, mind you he was trying to persuade his readers that after Iraq, Pakistan should be bombed, his mantra was basically just bomb the day lights out of most Muslim countries. Anyway thats my opinion of him.
Well i actually don't get your point. How can a biologist measure which sex is funnier? That would be objectively futile endeavour. Its like those Intelligent race experiments. Anyway i think the man was a twat and a hypocrite, but thats my opinion.
I hate you, you make me want to give up my errands and read Orwell Tongue.

I personally agree with you because when I refer to me liking hitchens I was talking about his pre 99 views though his views on god are great to read about. I like his books about Kissinger, Teresa and god but that's about it. Though yes he is a twat for the most part because he was spouting that Iran had nukes, and saddam must be stopped, ect.
I thought I should clarify my reason for like his books

I was expecting comments along the line of Toor's and I guess most of you took the wrong idea. No problem since none of you know me personally and vice versa. If some of you found it creepy and such then be it but it wasn't meant to be and I'm not going to apologise or waste any more time on this silly tirade about what my intentions were. Good day.

If you like mysteries then The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins is fantastic.  But I think the best book I ever read was A Tale of 2 Cities by Dickens.  The last few lines make you gasp

I think I've said this before on this site, but The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy trilogy of five. Not the Eoin Colfer one though. Maybe not intellectual enough for some, but makes me laugh everytime.

I really enjoyed reading The Braided Path by Chris Wooding.

It's a fantasy trilogy - but I read them so fast that it felt like it was one book. Totally recommendable if you like hot heroines in action, unexpected twists and slightly perverted villans.

If you do like fantasy I also recommend Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward. It's awesome! Lots of sex, fighting and sexy vampires!

In regards to the fiction try A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin.  The length is similar to Tolkien but Martin's Characters are alot more complex and interesting.

I've read all 5 (and hopefully 6 soon (GRRM is getting old.  Cry)). I really love them. But personally, I find Tolkien's world building and detail is unmatched. The way he describes areas, or the long family trees like the Kings of Númenor, the creation myth of that world, the languages, etc.

Anyhow, their style of writing is different. It boils down to preference.

No I definitely agree that Tolkien's world building skills are better than Martin's. I think Martin's work is better in regards to the characters though. His characters are what made his work extremely popular.

Right now I like Robert Jordan. He built a world like Tolkien and characters like Martin, minus all the incest. He uses a lot of modern and past elements of our world in his own work. Bioengineering, prophecy, superstition, Apollo missions, etc.  He takes events we see as common knowledge turning it into myth and legend in his world.  Wheel of Time is his main series but it is very long, probably close to 10000 pages or more.
