    Quote
NEW DELHI, Dec 17: Indian police were searching New Delhi on Monday for the men who gang-raped a 23-old-student and threw her off a bus in an attack that has sparked fresh concern for the safety of women in the city.  The woman accompanied by a male friend boarded a bus on Sunday night and was attacked by at least four men and gang-raped, police said. Some media reports said the attackers also included staff of the bus.

The victim’s companion was battered with iron rods before the men took turns and raped her, police officials said.  The couple were then thrown off the moving bus, seriously injuring the woman, they said.

“When they boarded the bus, there were a few other men as well in the vehicle,” area police chief Chhaya Sharma told reporters. “As of now, we can confirm the involvement of four men,” she said, adding police artists have drawn sketches of the attackers from descriptions given by the victims. Sharma said the female victim was in intensive care in a city hospital where her companion is also being treated.

The attack sparked new calls for greater security for women in New Delhi, which registered 568 rapes in 2011 compared to 218 in India’s financial capital Mumbai the same year.  “This is a shocking incident. I hope that the guilty are punished for the heinous crime,” said Kiran Walia, women and child development minister in the Delhi state government...

That's just nasty. Seriously fucking nasty.

Like, this is the kinda stuff we need the death penalty for nasty (as if they'll ever be caught).

New Dehli is worst for rapes?

Considering what Google trends has to say, that's not surprising (change the region thing to list and city):

I hope something good comes of this, in the way of social change in India.

I really really hope so too.

What a horrifying and sickening incident. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since it happened. I didn't realise it would upset me as much as it has over the past two weeks. Really hoped she would have been able to recover from such extensive injuries.

It was encouraging to see the protests despite the shameful reaction of the government to clamp down on the frustration of its citizens. The change can only come from within, by the men and women from all sections of Indian society. I hope the struggle for change gathers more momentum across all parts of India.

It makes me unbelievably sad though. The horrific rape was an extreme manifestation of all that is wrong in Indian society and culture, from the bigoted and patriarchal mentality to the weak and corrupt government.
Short term draconian measures won't have any significant effect. The long term solution is to tackle the root(s) of the problem.
Obviously not all Indian men are like that, but so many of them are. And I've seen glimpses of such attitudes throughout my life, which is why I guess it hurts me so much, because it could easily have been me.

I can only imagine the fear and pain she went through during and after the rape. RIP  Cry Cry Cry

Really saddening that she died from it too.

My older brother was in India two weeks ago, haven't had the chance to talk to him since he's been back. I don't know what India is like these days, how open they are about discussions on various topics. First thing to do is to identify and admit there's something wrong. A growing country is likely to want to hide things under the carpet more....I would think, to create a 'face' of maturity, build the society's general confidence before weeding out the flaws, but when you have a large thorn they can't face away. Hope they face and tackle these issues.

Indian PM ‘deeply saddened’ by gang-rape victim death  says news

    Quote
NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Saturday he was deeply saddened by the death of a gang-rape victim and that the protests which erupted in the aftermath of her assault were “understandable”.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that the unfortunate victim of the brutal assault that took place on December 16 in New Delhi has succumbed to the grievous injuries she suffered following that attack,”  he wrote on his website.

“We have already seen the emotions and energies this incident has generated. These are perfectly understandable reactions from a young India and an India that genuinely desires change.  “I want to tell them (her family) and the nation that while she may have lost her battle for life, it is up to us all to ensure that her death will not have been in vain.” India has been rocked by mass protests since the 23-year-old was brutally assaulted on a bus in New Delhi by a group of six men.

The government has tried to assuage the tide of anger by promising tougher punishments for the most extreme sex crimes as well as establishing an official commission of inquiry into the handling of the rape case. Singh, who has previously called for calm, said that it would be “a true homage to her memory if we are able to channelise these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action”.

“The need of the hour is a dispassionate debate and inquiry into the critical changes that are required in societal attitudes”...

Indian Prime Minister  writing on website is no use..  well Indians live their life with their gods.. goddesses.. rituals.... cricket gods....  Bollywood gods and goddesses.. political gods and goddesses  + off course there are millions of god men and god-women.

shuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu  busy life doing nothing...  that is what India was.. but this case may seem to wake them up..

Indian gang-rape victim cremated, was due to marry says news

Members of India’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) take part in a candlelight march in Amritsar on December 30, 2012. after the cremation ceremony for a gangrape victim.
    Quote
NEW DELHI: The victim of a gang-rape and murder which triggered an outpouring of grief and revulsion across India was cremated at a private ceremony on Sunday as it emerged she was planning to marry in February. The unidentified 23-year-old, the focus of nationwide protests since she was attacked on a bus in New Delhi two weeks ago, was cremated at a ceremony kept secret by authorities only hours after her body was repatriated from Singapore.

The funeral pyre was lit after traumatised relatives and friends said their final prayers at a ceremony in southwestern Delhi, according to mourners who revealed she had been due to wed a boyfriend who was injured in the same attack.

“They had made all the wedding preparations and had planned a wedding party in Delhi” for February, said Meena Rai, who was a close friend and neighbour.

Things are going to change in India, big time, they're already in momentum of evolving/growing country and something like this won't be looked away from, society won't allow the government to, particularly with greater number of women entering the work force over there.

Another News from Land of Snakes  says Mumbai photojournalist gang-raped on assignment  That was in Delhi and this was in Bombay..

    Quote
A 22-year-old photojournalist has been gang-raped by five men in the Indian city of Mumbai, police say. The woman, who was on assignment on Thursday evening in the Lower Parel area when she was attacked, is in hospital with multiple injuries. She was accompanied by a male colleague who was beaten by her attackers. Police have arrested one of the suspects.

In a similar case last December, a 23-year-old student was gang-raped on a bus in the capital, Delhi.  In that case, the woman and her male friend were brutally assaulted and she later died in hospital from her injuries.

The attack sparked nationwide protests and forced the authorities to introduce tougher laws for crimes against women.  The victim of Thursday's attack worked as an intern with a Mumbai-based English magazine and had gone to the Shakti Mills - a former textile mill that now lies abandoned and in ruins - for a photo shoot, police said. She has been admitted to Jaslok hospital in Mumbai, which said that she was stable and able to speak.

"She went through a minor investigation procedure today [Friday] morning. She had both internal and external injuries," the statement said. Hundreds of demonstrators have staged a silent protest in the city.

Mumbai police commissioner Satyapal Singh said the incident took place between "6pm and 6:30pm on Thursday" and described it as "reprehensible".  "The man [victim's male colleague] was clicking pictures on a camera while the girl was taking pictures on her mobile phone in the dilapidated building when one accused accosted them and inquired why they were there at the railway property," he said.

"He later called four more men to the spot. They tied the male colleague's hands with a belt and took the girl to the bushes and raped her." Mr Singh said nearly 20 teams had been formed to investigate the case and that all the accused had been identified. Earlier, police said 35 people had been detained and were being questioned. Sketches of the five accused were also released.

The attack has led to outrage in India with many taking to social media to express their anger.

The friend of that  Student  who was gang-raped ,  who saw all that ordeal from that Land of gods/goddesses.. Land of Snakes ... HINDIA speaks out

    Quote
NEW DELHI: As he recalls the attack that killed his best friend and left him grievously wounded, the young IT operator still can't fathom the depravity they encountered after a night out at a Delhi shopping mall.

    Quote
“I never imagined that one human being could treat another so badly,” said the 28-year-old about the fatal gang rape of his female companion on December 16. He recalled how “the rapists injured my friend in the most shocking ways, while they beat me with a metal bar and dumped us near a highway.” ”They wanted us to die. Now, I want them to die and she also wanted them to die... She wanted them to be set on fire,” he added.

The young man, who cannot be named to prevent identification of the victim which is prohibited according to Indian Law, visited his friend twice at a Delhi hospital before she was airlifted to Singapore by the Indian government for further treatment.

“She was in enormous pain but wanted to talk to me and her family. She would recall the incident and get very angry... We would quickly change the subject.” Remembering the visits, he said, ”I would ask her about the new clothes she bought with me and make plans about things we would do when she recovered. Those plans died with her.”

In an interview ahead of Tuesday's verdict, which saw the remaining four men convicted of murder and gang rape, he said how he is wracked by guilt for being unable to protect his 23-year-old friend as they made their way home from the cinema.

The pair had spent the Sunday evening watching 'Life of Pi' and were trying to flag down an autorickshaw when a bus pulled up. It was only after boarding that they realised it was no ordinary bus and that their fellow passengers were in fact a group of drunken joyriders who would rob them before conducting a sickening assault.

Nearly unconscious after being savagely beaten, he could do nothing but watch as his friend was repeatedly raped and then violated with an iron rod. The victim's intestinal injuries were so horrific that they led to her death in a Singapore hospital where she suffered multiple organ failure on December 29.

Severe injuries left him unable to attend his friend's funeral. The accused had broken his leg, stripped him and kicked him out of a moving bus along with the victim. But determined that her attackers would face justice, he was the first of up to 80 witnesses to reveal before the court what he had experienced and seen on December 16.

The trial may be over but the young man, who moved to Delhi in 2006 from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, is still struggling both physically and psychologically.

He resumed work in May this year. Sometimes he goes to the cinema alone, but his friend's fate is never far from his mind. Remembering her, he said “I could talk to her about anything, tease her and even share my coffee with her. Companionship and friendship meant being with her.

“She was cool, funny, mischievous had a great presence of mind. She could make anyone smile and maybe that is the reason why every Indian was angry and sad when she died,” he added.

“Her case made everyone feel guilty... society could not protect her."

“For me, I lost a friend... The guilt will always remain. The only good thing would be if we ensure that such cases do not happen ever again.”

Talking of his days after the incident, he said, “I wake up and the first thought that comes to my mind is always about the attack."

He has been critical of the police for failing to be sensitive to his mental condition and deplored the apathy of the passers-by who did little to help at the end of their nearly hour-long ordeal. “Sometimes I think about my friend, sometimes about the rapists. It sends shivers down my spine.”

well that is what folks on road in India think about that case but what that guy said is a FACT..

“Her case made everyone feel guilty... society could not protect her."

well  not only your society..  but All those gods/goddesses of that society prays could not save her .. neither the god ..oshu..doshu..boshu..allah ..bullah..dollah of this planet could save her..

Redefining what it means to 'be a man'

A UN survey of Asian men reveals how widespread violence against women is and how it starts young

Four Indian men have been convicted for the gang rape and murder of a young woman on a Delhi public bus last year. It's measly closure for a gruesome crime, and prosecutors asked for the death penalty, insisting that, "the common man will lose faith in the judiciary if the harshest punishment is not given".

Ironic, then, that it is the common man himself, in India and elsewhere, who is committing such heinous crimes. A massive UN study on the use of violence among 10,000 men in Asia-Pacific, released this week, reveals just how common rape is in Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka.

The study is loaded with critical findings that, after first depressing you, have the potential to revolutionize the way we design gender-based violence policies and programs and even how talk about these in society. The biggest revelation is just how frequent sexual violence is: 25% of the men surveyed admit to raping a partner or a stranger in their lifetime, while one in 25 have taken part in a gang rape.

Some of the study's findings are not as surprising: sexual entitlement is the driver of most rapes, yet the next-most common reason that men rape is "for fun" or "out of boredom".

(Please take a moment to let that sink in).

In every country surveyed, rape within relationships was the most common form of rape, yet also the least criminalized (in the Asia-Pacific region, but also worldwide) because the sanctity of marriage is still somehow upheld by the notion of sex-on-demand regardless of consent. Thus partner rape is rarely reported. Nearly 46% of men admitted to using physical or sexual violence against their partner at some point.

Despite great improvements in laws criminalizing violence against women, including rape (though not marital), in the Asia-Pacific region, most men still get away with it. More than two-thirds of men who admitted raping also said they had experienced no legal consequences whatsoever, though some mentioned feelings of guilt. The survey allowed men to anonymously answer questions using electronic devices, a tactic that was meant to encourage truthful answers to questions.

Findings show how early these actions start: 49% of men who had raped did so for the first time as teenagers. In case this suggests that abuses would be any less grave, remember that two of the men involved in the Delhi gang rape were teenagers. Without removing any culpability from the individual, there is a broader communal culpability it is also time to accept. The study also found that those who raped were more likely to have witnessed or experienced abuse, including homophobic bullying as a child or young person. There is a long and complicated chain that encourages this horrible behavior, and every link deserves attention.

After a prolific rape case in Steubenville, Ohio last year, which involved dozens of minors who sat by as one girl was raped, conversations began on the need to educate young kids on topics we often shielded them from, including consent and rape.

This is right on point, as researchers summed up the most significant factors that drive a man to rape as those rooted in "gender-inequitable constructions of masculinity". It's a mouthful, but it means a society with seriously scrambled and rigid ideas about what it means to "be a man". These constructions of masculinity hold everyone hostage, men as well as women.

It is not a stretch to see how a society that peddles pink princess toys for girls and blue toy guns for boys eventually gives rise to darker notions of subjugation and sexual entitlement, which manifest in rape and other acts gender-based violence – against any individual. Gender-based violence is resident in all corners of society, with causes and consequences more numerous and complex than any other issue being tackled. The solution is not just stricter rape laws, or more conversations with our sons, or more safe houses. It is all of these things and more, all at the same time and for a very long time.

Changing these constructs will not come easily or quickly, because ultimately, we are talking about excavating and reshaping the gender landscape. When men admit that they rape for fun, or because they are entitled to sex and will take it by force if she won't give it up, well that belies a landscape so bleak, it is hard to look at.

Yet here we are, and bleak as it is, we need more bleakness. We need more data, more eerie delving into the minds and realities of perpetrators – not to give them platforms or excuses, but to face this head on. That is when the change comes.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
