  • Taliban?: Woman publicly executed near Kabul

KABUL: A man, who Afghan officials say is a member of the Taliban, shot dead a woman after accusing her of adultery in front of a crowd near Kabul, a video obtained by Reuters showed.

In the three-minute video, a turban-clad man approaches a woman kneeling in the dirt and shoots her five times at close range with an automatic rifle, to cheers of jubilation from the 150 or so men watching in a village in Parwan province.

“Allah warns us not to get close to adultery because it’s the wrong way,” another man says as the shooter gets closer to the woman. “It is the order of Allah that she be executed”.

Provincial Governor Basir Salangi said the video, obtained on Saturday, was shot a week ago in the village of Qimchok in Shinwari district, about an hour’s drive from Kabul.

Such rare public punishment was a painful reminder to Afghan authorities of the Taliban’s 1996-2001 period in power, and it raised concern about the treatment of Afghan women 11 years into the NATO-led war against Taliban insurgents.

“When I saw this video, I closed my eyes … The woman was not guilty; the Taliban are guilty,” Salangi told Reuters.

When the unnamed woman, most of her body tightly wrapped in a shawl, fell sideways after being shot several times in the head, the spectators chanted: “Long live the Afghan mujahideen!”, a name the Taliban use for themselves.

The Taliban could not be reached for comment.

Despite the presence of over 130,000 foreign troops and 300,000 Afghan soldiers and police, the Taliban have managed to resurge beyond their traditional bastions of the south and east, extending their reach into once more peaceful areas like Parwan.

    Hard-won women rights in jeopardy?

Afghan women have won back basic rights in education, voting and work since the Taliban, who deemed them un-Islamic for women, were toppled by US-backed Afghan forces in late 2001.

But fears are rising among Afghan women, some lawmakers and rights activists that such freedoms could be traded away as the Afghan government and the United States pursue talks with the Taliban to secure a peaceful end to the war.

Violence against women has increased sharply in the past year, according to Afghanistan’s independent human rights commission. Activists say there is waning interest in women’s rights on the part of President Hamid Karzai’s government.

“After 10 years (of foreign intervention), and only a few kilometres from Kabul… how could this happen in front of all these people?” female lawmaker Fawzia Koofi said of the public execution in Parwan.

“This is happening under a government that claims to have made so much progress in women’s rights, claims to have changed women’s lives, and this is unacceptable. It is a huge step backwards,” said Koofi, a campaigner for girls’ education who wants to run in the 2014 presidential election.

Salangi said two Taliban commanders were sexually involved with the woman in Parwan, either through rape or romantically, and decided to torture her and then kill her to settle a dispute between the two of them.

“They are outlaws, murderers, and like savages they killed the woman,” he said, adding that the Taliban exerted considerable sway in his province.

Earlier this week a 30-year-old woman and two of her children were beheaded in eastern Afghanistan by a man police said was her divorced husband, the latest of a string of so-called “honour killings”.

Some Afghans still refer to Taliban courts for settling disputes, viewing government bodies as corrupt or unreliable.

    This is so disheartening.

Like a compass needle that points north, a man?s accusing finger always finds a woman. Always.

Sure!  Go ahead and gang-rape the poor woman and then turn around and accuse her of adultery and execute her for it. Thank you Islam and your circular logic. :-/

Who though in that village will be brave enough to say "Now the woman has dead but she could not committee adultery by herself. The men must now die also for their part!" Until the day that those men stop being cowards carrying huge guns not a thing will change. That woman was twice and again as strong as those coward men. Those men are all mouth and gun not one bit honour or integrity or justice or thoughtfulness or courage.

This frame grab received on July 8, 2012, taken from an undated video which was handed over by a Qol villager to the Parwan provincial government shows a gathering of people watching the execution by gunfire of a 22 year old woman named as Najiba (not pictured) in Qol village, Parwan province, north of Kabul. — Videograb provided by AFP

The commander of Nato’s 130,000 troops in Afghanistan, General John Allen, offered to help local security forces track and capture the men involved in what he called “an atrocity of unspeakable cruelty”.

The brutal shooting of the lone woman before a cheering mob of men is shown in graphic detail in a video of the event in a village in Parwan province some 100 kilometres north of the capital Kabul.

“We have sent a police force to the area,” Parwan provincial governor Basir Salangi told AFP, adding that the government had no permanent presence in the valley.

“They are searching for the Taliban who are responsible but the Taliban, including the killer, have fled to the mountains.”

Police?? what Police?/ TAKE THE GUNS KILL THEM ALL..  Your fucking Govt is in power for six years going no where you idiot..

Roshna Khalid, Salangi’s spokeswoman, separately told AFP the 22-year-old woman, named as Najiba, was married to a member of the hardline Islamist Taliban and was accused of adultery with a Taliban commander.

“Within one hour they decided that she was guilty and sentenced her to death. They shot her in front of villagers in her village, Qol,” she said.

Afghan women protest over woman’s public execution says news

    Quote
KABUL: Dozens of Afghan women’s rights activists took to the streets Wednesday to protest against the recent public execution of a young woman for alleged adultery, which was captured in a horrific video.

The 22-year-old victim was shot dead as dozens of men cheered in a village about 100 kilometres north of the capital Kabul.

The execution was blamed by the authorities on Taliban militants and caused global outrage, with world leaders denouncing the fundamentalists, who are waging an insurgency against the Western-backed government.

“We want justice,” the protesters, almost all women, shouted as they marched from the women’s affairs ministry towards the UN headquarters in Kabul.

“The execution of the woman by the Taliban was a crime… the government must do everything to bring the culprits to justice,” parliamentarian Shinkai Karokhail, who joined the march, told AFP.

“This is the duty of the government to deliver justice.”

President Hamid Karzai condemned the killing as un-Islamic and unforgivable, while security forces have launched a manhunt for those responsible.

The commander of Nato’s 130,000 troops in Afghanistan, General John Allen, offered to help local security forces track and capture the men involved in what he called “an atrocity of unspeakable cruelty”.

Public executions of alleged adulterers were common when the Taliban were in power from 1996 until 2001, when they were ousted by a US-led invasion for harbouring Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks.

Good point.  I notice too, that only the woman gets punished for committing adultery.  There had to be a male there for her to do so.  The man, or in this case, the men, should get the exact same punishment as the woman.  But, you know what?  If that equality happened, you know how they would punish the woman?  Probably by throwing marshmallows at her........
