It sounds like the trial and all the publicity is going exactly how he would have wanted. He is probably pleased with his performance in the court. He calmly read out a 6000 word speech!
He is clearly a narcissist with a big ego, and he saw the opportunity to become a hero among a certain segment of society.

The doctors have said he isn't mentally ill.

Humans really do have a capacity for evil like this - you can't put it down to mental illness. We have to face it that men with clear heads can do this out of ideology and hate. He clearly is a sociopath though, unable to empathise with the pain of others.

Well as far as criminal responsibility for acts of killing goes he's been clinically deemed fit for trial.

I'm not sure if he will be re-assessed at any point, if so this will change.

If not though we know he didn't kill himself by shooting himself in the head as most 'Columbine' style shooters tend to do.

He didn't do a siege and have an armed confrontation with the police when they located him ending in him dying in a 'blaze of glory'.

He laid down his weapon and surrendered.

He'd planned it for years.

So he is definitely sociopathic, but sociopathy can come within the remit of human agency.

I suspect this speech will have activated chatter amongst the sociopath far-right with terrorist admiration or inclination in Europe and the USA. He is clearly speaking to an audience he imagines out there in the world I hope the intelligence services are using this as a fishing net to detect that chatter.

The truly frightening thing is that this man was completely under the radar. He did it alone, planned it meticulously, stockpiled his materials without any detection, guns, ammo and fertiliser for his bomb. As yet no formal logistical network with others has been detected - he appears to be the archetype of the lone wolf terrorist. And he's laid out a template and manifesto for any future terrorist to use as inspiration. That is what is worrying now.

he's hoping to get a prison sentence, because then he'll be seen by some loonies as a political prisoner/martyr, and people will start questioning the legitimacy of his arguments, that's why he wants to be tried as sane. If he is declared insane, all of his theories are insane as well.

Anyway, Billy, there were two medical examinations btw, the first one said he was crazy, I'm thinking he faked the second one. Any person who sees the killing of innocent kids (his own 'kin' for the most part) and cries at his own propaganda video is insane. If he was a 'sane' sociopath with the same motives he would have gone after a mosque or something, but not ethnic Norwegian kids, it's unprecedented for far-right racist types to do something like that.

Oh, and he doesn't have that much support amongst the far right, the slightly crazies (zealot anti-Muslim types) don't like him because he killed kids and it's generally thought of as immoral. The extreme crazies (SF/WN/NEO types) don't like him because he is pro-Israel/pro-Mason and isn't declaredly committed to racism, plus he hates on Hitler and nazis in his manifesto.

His friends are few and far between, very few fringists and people who have slipped in the cracks-I would imagine the mentally instable lunatic Christian fundamentalist fringe of people like the EDL are his only friends.

The clinicians would have been duped by him? Its too easy to say he's insane. It seems insane because its beyond our ethical understanding. But whatever his human and psychological balance, he had human agency. He wasn't acting after schizophrenic voices in his head told him to do it. He did it 'rationally' within his own agency and responsibility.

So why has he been cleared for trial? Why would clinicians be duped? In as high a profile case as this. You're saying a sociopath can be mainpulative - of course they can. But that may not be enough to indicate a lack of personal agency for his actions. There are very specific parameters for this in law.

Anyway, I think I heard somewhere that he may undergo another assessment, but I'm not sure. If things change I'll change my mind.

He's not a white nationalist, he's a western nationalist, there are subtle differences yes, but it is important to distinguish between ideologies. Just because someone can lay their thoughts in steps doesn't mean they are acting rationally. If I wear a tinfoil hat because I believe aliens can read my thoughts and tinfoil will keep them out, society will consider me insane, as will a court.

In it it states that in the US a sociopath would be unlikely to meet the criteria for an insanity plea, but this sort of crime is unique in Norway, this is the worst crime they have ever seen in modern history, so this is unprecedented, we'll see what happens, I have a feeling he will be declared insane. Plus, unlike the reactionary self-serving justice system in the US, in Scandinavia and Norway in particular they have a more clear-thinking justice system which recognises pre-determinate factors and the sources of criminality (other than just because of 'bad people') so I have a feeling that their understanding of insanity will vary from what we are used to.

Oh and abood, I hate all of them, but comparing their ideologies is like comparing me (as a social democrat) to an anarchist or a PETA-inspired terrorist. When it comes to politics we have to recognise the differences, subtle as they may be, generalising is a bad idea.

As much as he fits himself into a narrative of Christianist 'Knights of Templar' extremism and may elide many traditional white nationalist ideas his agenda is still rooted in a racialised idea of invasion and white Norwegian ethnicity being in danger.

I'm all for accepting nuances in this, for sure.

Also, the clinicians who tested him are in a better position to judge whether he met the standards for criminal responsibility and up to know they believe he does.

Anyway, the question here is legal insanity (which is what the judges are going to decide), not clinical sanity, we'll see what happens.

Also, I read his manifesto, or parts of it, he talks about how Muslims who integrate by the year 2020 will be accepted, while westerners who are still pro-multicultural (notice how he doesnt talk about multiracialism per ses) will be wiped out. I've spent enough time reading racist forums and material to tell you that no white nationalist would ever 'accept' the presence of even a single non-white in his country-and they are usually more 'careful' about spilling 'white blood' even if it's those of their opposition or traitors (that's why they blame a lot of it on jews). Sure the ideology is driven by racism, but I'm just pointing out that he can't be compared to white nationalists, who despise him for his take on things.

I would say actually it's the fault of reactionary thinking, whether on the left or right. This includes the unquestioning thought that immigration is a threat, asylum seekers are thieving liars, Muslims are culturally alien, criminals are 'bad people', humans have absolute free will (the list is endless). Sure, right wing politicians are the worst offenders, but this thread of reactionary thinking exists everywhere in society, even among the left.
