  • Giant blast hits government buildings in Oslo, Norway
     OP - July 22, 2011, 03:19 PM

    Quote
(CNN) -- At least one explosion rocked government buildings in Oslo, Norway, on Friday, state TV and witnesses said.

Windows in several buildings had been blown out, and people were in the street bleeding, state TV broadcaster NRK said on its website.

There are conflicting reports about whether a second blast followed the first, which occurred mid-afternoon in the center of the Norwegian capital.

One explosion happened near a government building housing the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, said Linda Reinholdsen, a reporter for Norwegian state broadcaster NRK. Another hit near the Norwegian parliament, she told CNN.

Several buildings in Oslo were on fire, she said, and smoke was pouring from them.

Walter Gibbs, a journalist with Reuters, said he saw eight injured people, including two or three with serious wounds and one who looked dead.

Gibbs said he believes one explosion happened on an upper floor of a main government building. He said it blew out every window on the side of the building.

The blast also severely damaged the Oil Ministry and left it in flames, he said.

Reuters reported that Stoltenberg was safe.

Nick Soubiea, an American-Swedish tourist in Oslo, told CNN he was less than 100 yards from the blast, which he described as deafening.

"It was almost in slow motion, like a big wave that almost knocked us off our chairs," he said. "It was extremely frightening."

He said the streets were crowded with people trying to get away from the center of the city. "There are people running down the streets, people crying, everyone's on their cell phones calling home," he said.

A hotel worker in Oslo's Grand Hotel, about a five-minute walk from the government building, said everyone in the hotel felt and heard the explosion, which felt like someone was shaking the entire building.

"It's crazy," she said, not wanting to be identified because she is not authorized to speak to the media on behalf of the hotel. "This happens in the big world, not in Oslo. I'm shocked."

Vivian Paulsen, media adviser for the Norwegian Red Cross, lives 20 minutes away from the center of Oslo in the northern outskirts of the city. She said she heard a "huge blast."

"I heard the big bang, I didn't think it was anything serious. I can still see smoke coming up from the place," she said, watching from her apartment balcony. She also heard sirens and ambulances.

As for Oslo, she said what others have been saying: Events like this don't happen in the northern European capital.

"There's occasional arrests of terror suspects we read about in the paper, or people planning something. I can hear ambulances and sirens."

Prediction: not Muslims but rather anarchists.

Yeah, I know it's a long shot, but my spidey senses are tingling on this one.

Hey Hallakuf, why don't you shut the fuck up until we know what happened for sure? While Muslim terrorism is a likely bet, it could have been political terrorism of a different sort, or it may not have even been terrorism at all. So save your snide (and really, utterly played-out and uncreative) pontificating until more info comes in.

^this. Also, reports that a nearby kids summer camp has been attacked by an armed gun man...details sketchy at the moment.

Well they're saying a car bomb now, so unless there happened to be a fertilizer truck sitting next to a leaky diesel tanker that accidentally got hit by a bundle of very powerful firecrackers, it's definitely terrorism of some kind.

Yeah, if someone shot up a youth camp and it was linked to a car bombing in Oslo, I don't see how it could be anything other than Muslim terrorists-- out of the usual terrorism suspects, only Islamists are that utterly bloodthirsty and nihilistic to shoot up a fuckin kids summer camp in Norway*.

But we'll see-- it's possible the two incidents are unrelated, and also possible the guy shooting up the summer camp was a general fuckin nutter rather than specifically a terrorist.

EDIT: *I stand corrected, but in my defense I didn't realize it was a camp for socialist party youth-- makes sense for a domestic right-wing nutter to attack now.

It is striking how silent it got after the explotion. Then, people started to run. And I stood there, in the surreal inferno, and I tried to understand what to do. People ran for their lives while they cried. Some people with blood down their faces. I was paralyzed. Then I called my husband. (He is with his parents, far away from Oslo.) I didn't know what to do. My pupils were large as dinner plates. I was in shock. No, shock is not the word. It was bigger than that. It was surreal. Around me, people ran in fear. My survival instinct caught me, and I ran away. At last i got a taxi, which drove all the way around the city to get to my home. And now I'm safe in my apartment. (Thank some higher power, if it exists.)  Cry

You are right that Muslim terrorosm isn't proven yet. But I would be really very, very surprised if it would turn out to be else. After hundreds of terrorist attack, all by Islamists, I think I have the right to think what I posted. Yes, I could be wrong.

Inevitably a group has claimed responsibility, though it's early days so best to remain skeptical.

"A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces’ presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. “We have warned since the Stockholm raid of more operations,” the group said, according to Mr. McCants’ translation, apparently referring to a bombing in Sweden in December 2010. “What you see is only the beginning, and there is more to come.” The claim could not be confirmed."

No one knows for sure. Some reports are saying that as many as 30 people were killed on the island. As for the bomb that exploded in Oslo, there might still be dead bodies in the building where the bomb exploded. Apparently there was a man disguised as a police officer who was spotted on both sites, and this person has a nordic appearance.

No one really knows for sure what has been going on at the moment. The norwegian police seems to be very restrictive with what they are disclosing. In any case 17 people have been confirmed dead. 7 in Oslo, and 10 on the island.  :(

The person arrested at the island is of Norwegian ethnicity. This has been confirmed by the Norwegian prime minister.

I tried to reach those i think are at the camp. Many of those at the Norwegian Labour Youths Camp are from the age 15-25. Its young people. 10 people are confirmed to be dead. And 7 at the area where the government buildings are.
