Anyway I know there are lots of people out there who don't like the U.S. military, hope you all don't have a problem with that because as crazy as everything is over there, I'm still glad I went to Afghanistan.

Hey americangirl, honestly I'm really proud of people like you who make a difference in our world. Whatever negative things people say about the US, British or European forces in the Middle East, especially Afghanistan, as much as they have a right to voice their opinion - they're all wrong - I think.  Smiley

Very poetic btw, and good luck, sorry I don't have any advice to offer.

I'm not sure if his Arabic is good enough to get a translating job in Dubai. He speaks some Arabic but the languages he is fluent in are Urdu, Hindi, Farsi, Dari, Pashtu, and of course English. Is it easier to get a work permit in Dubai than in India, for an Afghan citizen?

As an American, you will get visa for India very easily. But your fiance may have a harder time. You go to India on your own and wait for him. He should sneak into Pakistan and from there sneak into India.

Or he may get the visa for India and leave his job and meet you there. You can live in India for sometime and get married, and apply for immigration visa. You can always find a job teaching English conversation etc.

Some Hindu bigot lecturing an ex-Mormon Afghan War vet on her personal relationship with an ex-Muslim Afghan interpreter for the US military.

I think olweasel got the best smiley to respond to that, especially because we don't have a total douchebag smiley.

    The truth hurts, Mr. Q-Man.

If I were a bigot, why would I suggest that she should wait for the Muslim in India? Muslims are always inviting non-Muslims to Islam. So what is the problem if I suggest that she should ask him to leave Islam? Why the double standard?

Are you serious? Can people sneak into India from Pakistan without any risk of getting shot by border security?

Cheesy You're funny, Ram. According to Muslims, my fiancee is an infidel and deserves to die. And that was before he became an interpreter working for the U.S.
Thanks to everyone else - I'm still not sure what to do, but at least you guys understand the situation. I don't know if he could get a visa to India or not, I just know that he's been to India before, so I think it should be possible. I was checking some websites about Dubai too, that would probably work if I could get a job there, but getting the job is the tricky part.

How about Hong Kong? All I know about it is, it was a free port. I have no idea what that means..

From a quick check of wikipedia, I think the free port has to do with trade, not visas - unless someone has more information than I do?

Why don't you seek an advice from an immigration lawyer, preferably an Afghan, as they deal with this kind of issues in daily basis and I'm sure they have already figured the easiest way out?
  • Re: ex-Mormon engaged to ex-Muslim

I don't know any Afghan immigration lawyers - if anyone does, please give me a reference. I have talked to a few immigration lawyers, I would be able to get him a fiancee visa except that we have to have met in person in the last 2 years. It's been over 2 years, so we have to find a way to meet somewhere before I can get him a visa.

If you live in a big city, the best way to find an afghan lawyer is to go to one of those ethnic stores (afgan, pakistani, indian). You'll be able to find business cards, flyers, and free newsletters full of ads.
The fiance visa may take longer to bring him to usa.

I have talked to a few immigration lawyers, I would be able to get him a fiancee visa except that we have to have met in person in the last 2 years.

    Eligibility Requirements
If you petition for a fiancé(e) visa, you must show that You (the petitioner) are a U.S. citizen
You intend to marry within 90 days of your fiancé(e) entering
     United States.
You and your fiancé(e) are both free to marry and any previous marriages must have been legally terminated by divorce, death, or annulment
You met each other, in person, at least once within 2 years of filing your petition. The are two exceptions that require a waiver:
    1. If the requirement to meet would violate strict and long-established customs of yo your fiancé(e)’s foreign culture or social practice
     2. If you prove that the requirement to meet would result in extreme hardship to you.

It is not very dificult to sneak into India. Best way is for him go to Bangladesh, it will be very easy for him to do so. Thousands of Bangladeshis work in India illegally.

As far Mr. Q-Man is concerned, he is a total moron. If he had an iota of intelligence, he would be able to understand what I meant by "if he asks americangirl to convert to Islam". For him to suggest that I want him to get shot is stupid. Mr. Q-Man can only think anally.

Hmm. Under Islamic law it would be fine for him to marry you I think.

    Which school(s)?

    Quote
Muslim men are allowed to marry Christian and Jewish women without the women having to convert.

There is at first glance a contradiction in the Koran on this matter. 5:5 states:

This day  the good things are allowed to you....the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you

    Yet 2:221 states:

And do not marry the idolatresses [mushrikati] until they believe

The question then is how does the Muslim explain away this glaring contradiction in order to maintain their belief in the divine origin of the Koran?
